There was plenty of "photoshopping" in the 80s. It's just that it was actually done manually in a photo shop.
Photo print and negative editing/enhancing has been done for ages. The term airbrushing used to literally involve airbrushing a print or negative.
Found this article about techniques used in the 40s.
