In the South? We had a 2.5 ton Carrier in my first house that was like 1350 sq feet and it struggled during the summer.

Yeah I live in Monroe in a one year old home. It can hold 72 degrees even when it's 95 outside.

Generally speaking, $1500/ton is about right.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have two thermostats split between two 2 ton units?
Or just break it up electronically into three zones. Why not? Your plumbing and electrical are "zoned".

nope, sounds fair to me
fair price is $1500 per ton and high price is $2000 per ton
fair price 5 ton x $1500 = $7,500
high price 5 ton x $2000 = $10,000
shits not cheap anymore

I thought the general rule of thumb is 600 sf / ton, therefore you would need a 4 ton unit. Especially, with a decent 16 SEER.
Is there a price break for 4 ton. You don't want to oversize.

Like I said the AC guy that gave me the quote based it on btus not tons (necessarily)...quoted me different tonnage on different units. The 14 and 18 seer were 4 ton I believe.
I have a 4 ton currently

Is this true with any brand or on average?

That quote is similar to what I paid for a similarly sized unit to be installed a year ago. Mine was a Lennox unit, though.
