Is there some logic to the more square shaped steering wheels?

Seems like this is becoming a trend

Is that somehow supposed to be more comfortable? I think they look a bit silly.

For reference - new Corvette interior:

Is that the main reasoning behind them?

Generally this is done on cars with a fast steering ratio, since you don't really need to rotate the wheel 2 or 3 full turns to make a turn. I like it.

I am less enthusiastic about the "we-glued-a-tablet-to-the-dash" touchscreen setup, especially if it does the up-and-down gimmick. Tesla started this, and that's fine for Tesla since the big touchscreen was a shortcut taken by a non-car company to build a car dash. Absolutely sucks in a Toyota or Chevy, though... just ugly and awkward.

Lower for more leg room with the steering column able to be mounted lower.

Top for better view of the gauges.

Fast ratios means you're not turning it all that much in normal driving.

Gonna hate on it cause you cant afford it? But for real, it's a better grip.

I suppose I'd have to try one out

I'm perfectly fine with my poor person rounded steering wheel

I don’t mind it - easier reach.

They are like this on all of the new Audi’s now.

A lot of the time it's a smaller wheel overall. Using more motion out of less. Faster performance cars rely on wheels that fit the drivers hands better. In those cars you may need quicker reactions.

It’s from racing. Since race cars are so cramped they are squared off and have a high steering ratio so they never have to make a full turn so they can always keep both hands on the wheel. It it’s mainly for show but you do get more legroom

If you have ever driven an old corvette with the large 16" steering wheel and with no tilt option available, those are a blessing.

One of my son’s has a Tesla and I drove it. The large flat screen had me take my eyes of the road a bit but, after being in the car several times while he drove, I see how the driver meshes with the controls and it is awesome.

As mentioned leg clearance and vision. In a sports car on the track it is very unusual to ever need to shuffle your hands. With your hands at the proper 3 and 9 positions you can get almost 90 degrees of lock without moving your hands. The higher steering ratios in sports cars allow this to work where it doesn't in a 1970s Cadillac. The flat-top in the C8 is specifically for vision out of the cockpit. A round-topped wheel would cut off part of your vision out the window.

Yeah I’ve never found myself wondering why my steering wheel has to be so round
