Its based on the genetic code of the virus. So they analyze the cells of the actual virus and figure out the genetic code and then create a vaccine using that code. The code enters the cells of your body and your cells create an immune response. There is no actual virus in the vaccine. Here is a good article LINK

Excellent article! I used to read Scientific American on a regular basis. I usually skipped over articles in the life science domain though.

Twitter thread on topic with articles. Vaccines can and do last longer than actually getting it for other viruses. Also, just because you don’t have antibodies any longer doesn’t mean your body doesn’t remember.
