Is the Ship Island (MS) Excursion any good?

We haven’t been in quite a while. I’m familiar with the basic policies and such from the website but wondering if it’s worth the trip, pros cons, etc., from anyone who’s been recently.
TIA.
TIA.

Are there any good Civil War monuments or guided walking tours of Ship Island?

Sounds like an OB topic.
Just start off your post saying you wear hearing protection while drinking seltzers when dove hunting. This way you'll let them know you're one of them.

Did it couple years ago and all I remember was carrying that heavy arse ice chest to the beach.

Is the water that much clearer on Ship Island vs Gulf Shores/Orange Beach?
I see it's a 2+ hours round trip on that ferry. I'd rather just drive the extra two hours to Orange Beach for the day.

Getting to walk through the fort was pretty cool. Seeing the huge cannons and getting up close check them out.
Beach was decent, lots of washed up shells, driftwood, water was clean.
Just remember riding back on the ferry in the pouring down rain.

We enjoyed it but it’s a long walk to the gulf side if you lugging a bunch of crap. Also ridiculously hot on that board walk. I suggest renting the beach chairs ahead of time and packing a small cooler with wheels. The fort was closed when I went last summer so we didn’t get to tour it.

Not usually, but sometimes. We used to ride out there from Slidell when i lived there.

Ship Island is cool, the bad part is you are stuck out there until the boat leaves. If I ever go back I will bring a tailgate tent and an ice chest. No shade was a bitch.

I think the boat had three or four times through the day it ran. I was definitely jealous of those that anchored private boats on the bay side.

It’s not bad . Water is good on the gulf side. Beach is okay, mixture of light and dark sand that gets hot AF. Like you can’t walk through it barefoot without burning your feet. Ferry ride is 50 minutes each way. Didn’t check out the fort, but they do tours. I’d go again.

It’s definitely clearer than the MS coast. I think it might be clearer than Orange beach area but not Florida beaches.
I took the kids a few times a couple years ago, mainly because you can get a nice beach with clear water and just book a hotel overnight in Gulfport for cheap or just drive home after.
Bring a roller ice chest. They also have a grill there that sells burgers hot dogs etc.

Cool fort, no shade, and so many jellyfish that it may dissuade you from even getting in the water.
ETA: I don’t remember the water being especially clear. Just a little better wave action than the Sound.

The Ship Island boardwalk is why I purchased my first ice chest with wheels on it.
