I wish people would understand that newspapers publish a lot of opinion pieces and are all over the political or ideological map. Some of them are pretty stupid
But you shouldn’t confuse the opinion side of a newspaper with the journalists/actual news reporting side. They are basically two separate businesses

The op eds in both left and right leaning news sources tend to be more extreme. It gives the publisher a chance to define what they support.

NYT used to be professional.

But think about the question and how you would answer. Your 4YO asks why someone hurt people in a church in Texas. How do YOU answer? Now, what if the kid was 10? 18? Would the answer be the same?
