I'm almost 60 and am 100% a company man. I call it taking ownership. I have, however, worked for the same employer since 1993.

The exact quote by George Carlin is:
“Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit.”

In large companies, yes.
The smaller family run places still have that sense of loyalty.

Nowadays unless you own the company, being a company man is idiotic. Company don't give a frick about you.

A mentor of mine gave me the best advice ever many years ago:
“The only reason someone is going to hire you is to make money off you.”
I’ve been self employed for most of my career.

If an organization would like to have loyalty from employees, they should initiate and invest in such a relationship and then maintain it.
Employees should try to set a similar relational tone, but they are not in the position of strength.
It takes effort from both sides to have a mature and loyal relationship.
Quid pro quo.

My 43,000 person company is private, and treats me just fine. But it also doesn't have an Indian CEO like my last two, one of which treated me like total arse.

Good, I'm glad your doing well. The company I'm with is pretty good and I will likely stay with them as well.
I don't think most of the problems is "Indian CEO's" though although they don't have a good track record. It's mostly "Ivy League" MBA graduates that buy into the Jack Welch style management of sucking up to large shareholders like Hedge Funds and PE firms.
