Frontier is still around and I can see Breeze helping out.

bleeding whale airlines have been kept alive artificially forever because of strong politicians protecting their turf, years ago an exec at my company told me they liked to see a couple of low cost carriers around because it gave them negotiating leverage against employee groups but they are no real threat to the big guys, companies like USAir, TWA, America West should have disappeared decades ago but they had strong political protection and all of them hit the lottery by just hanging around

I hope someone does, I bought a bunch of their stock when the rumor of a merge/buyout with Spirit surfaced a while back

Yeah I remember talking to those guys and they always talked shite to us but would ask if we were hiring.
I remember towards the end the company asked the union members to take some pay cut (like 10%) and they refused.
I remember thinking that a 100% pay cut is worse than a 10% pay cut.

they made out like bandits when AA bought them

TWA was in the same boat when AA bought them, the two other bidders were Icahn and Davis, and they were bidding to gut the remaining assets and dissolve the company, if AA hadn't been the highest bidder TWA would have never operated another flight, Reno Air absolutely hit the lottery by being purchased by AA

Just like Airtrash when WN bought them. I remember talking to the trash people and they were bitching about getting raises and more vacation time. I wish WN would have been able to just fire all them but I think AA made that not be a reality after they did it when they bought another airline…. I can’t remember which airline though.

I thought they did just that with one of their charity cases, was it Morris Air?

American is going to buy them to absorb their fleet and gates.
They should keep the name and create a budget friendly option for American, and call it American Spirit Airlines. Our fares are low, and we will get you there with fares as low as 17.76 plus fees.
Instead of a yellow livery, they can go all red white and blue looking like a flag in the sky.

what an original idea!!
that's kind of how the American Eagles, Delta Express, etc. were formed, to try to get around paying pilots what they should be paid, it's come back to bite them in the arse big time though

I believe so, but AA (if I’m thinking of the right airline) was the last one that did it. After they did it the government stepped in and said that airlines couldn’t do that anymore. It was in the late 90s or very early 2000s. Like pre 9-11.
I’m drawing a blank right now I apologize.

definitely wasn't AA

I hope so. Terminal 4 at FLL is a disaster and causes traffic for all of the normal people.

Frick, this is going to drive me nuts.
I remember talking to a union rep for WN and when I asked why don't they just fired the trash people. Said that WN couldn't because another airline did it. And now it's law.
He was actually in favor of firing them which is shocking considering how unions always want more dues.....I mean....more high paying jobs for Americans.....yeah that.....not the dues.....

Late 90s I believe. It might have also been United.
I just remember him saying that airlines can't just fire everyone from the airline that they purchased.
Now the airline could say hey we are over staffed in PHX where you were working so we will offer you an opening in our under staffed BDL.......but that also might change depending on if that company has a union for below/above wing.

pretty sure WN did that with Muse Air?

I actual prefer Spirit over say AA or United.
Normally have better times and connections for me.
I also never had them cancel or delay flights more the 40mins.
Anything to shorten time in Airports/planes is major plus for me.
Delta is always 2 connecting flights so no....

A lot of airlines did that. But after the one I am trying to remember the government stepped in.
It could also have been a MX department and not necessarily below/above wing.

Also it wasn't WN that caused it because he was/is union rep (now I think grievance specialist) for WN. He definitely didn't say WN.

What I don’t understand is the government wouldn’t let them and I believe JetBlue merge because it would like monopolize the business.
It’s a tight rope
If you let them consolidate, there will be cuts in service and jobs, but it is orderly
If you block the merger, if both airlines stay afloat, it’s better, but if one crashes out, you still end up with consolidation and cuts and it’s a lot messier
