I thought I was having a stroke the first time it happened to me.

I'd be more interested to know why people usually see some sort of demon or man in black.

My childhood and earlier sleep paralysis would have a man in black. But now as I got older and accustomed to it, I just see a distorted view of whatever room I'm in.

Like the bedroom door being open instead of shut. Something you'd expect in a dream.

I can tell you between the ages of 8-11 it was a constant for me. I even had a song that could put me into an epileptic type trance state like that Seinfeld episode where it happens to Kramer . Swear to God. The sensation was that I would be pushed down on my chest by a heavy weight, unable to wake up. I would get smaller and the room would get bigger and push me down into my bed. Then I would rise above my body and look down at myself. I’d fight to wake up the whole time but I couldn’t . I dreaded going to sleep.

Happened to me once when I was like 6 and I still remember all of it.

I’ve had it once a week at minimum for the past two months.
I’ve been on a step down program for Effexor and that’s what it’s being connected to.

I can tell you that if you are able to realize that it is happening then it greatly reduces the current and post feelings.
However, if you don’t gain any control, it can get tough.
I can only describe what I experienced in a way that really doesn’t make sense. I feel like I am awake of my being, but only have about 5% control over it.

Most times I have to remind myself to breath (I think so anyways). Upon waking I always gasp for air.
I also know that I have the ability to try to wake myself up. I’m almost coaching myself to wake up. I’m not sure how long this actually goes on for, but it feels like 20-30 mins.

Worst of all is when I finally awake I feel like I am sick/lethargic/post workout. I stay in a daze for at least an hour upon being awake and there isn’t much that I’ve found to help this feeling.

Have you ever tried just powering through it and flipping yourself to the side to wake up?

It takes a lot if willpower, but it's better than just waiting it out.

I've had sleep paralysis quite a few times. A couple times i was watching myself a few feet away. Scary shite.

Not as scary as an apparition waking me up in a hotel room but close

Dude, I was literally afraid of the song. I still have anxiety about it. I think it hits a specific tone that alters my brain. I have perfect pitch- our whole family are musicians-it’s hilarious I know. If it comes on the radio I turn it immediately. You are going to laugh:

Oh yeah, I have tried, but that’s not happening.

If I could equate its to something I’d say that the pain of trying to move myself would be equal to holding someone seizing down.

Lol that's funny.

Especially if it plays randomly while you're in a store or on the radio.

ETA: At least it's not a song that's still played a lot, like Hotel California or something

I have also seen something of the sort. Always sitting in a gargoyle type position. Once on a chair and a Native American covered in blood perched up the same way on a desk.

I haven’t really thought about it in 17 years, but one night when I was younger I felt like I was floating above my bed and something was pulling me up. It kept pulling and pulling me up but I was stuck on the ceiling and couldn’t go any farther. I’ve also felt like someone was watching me sleep or something wasn’t right and never had the ability to move or scream for help. I’m not sure if I want to start looking into this stuff or not.

Weird how many of us have had similar episodes of this.

I don’t think it was a dream, I vividly remember the full sensation of floating and being pinned against popcorn ceiling.

That sounds like sleep paralysis.

Some people see themselves in the 3rd person or see someone else. And it feels more real than a dream because you're partially awake.
