Is Lack of Tech Savvy a Detriment to Some High Risk Folks Receiving Vaccine?

My understanding is that digital sign ups are the best way to receive the vaccine. My folks (65+), who are relatively tech savvy, essentially carpet bombed the vaccine sign up lists are received their doses relatively quickly. It has also been my understanding that younger folks have been pretty successful receiving the vaccine by taking the same approach. To be clear, I’m not criticizing the carpet bomb approach when you are in the current risk category. I think that is the best approach given the rules of the game.

Is this an issue we should be concerned with? Should tech savvy friends and relatives check with their high risk family to ensure necessary assistance is provided? Should their be a big public outreach to find these folks and make sure they get the vaccine if they want it?

Biden said it's only blacks and Hispanics.

Yes. My wife administers the vaccine and has been on the phone with 5-10 people we know personally about how to sign up. Unpaid of course.

Great job by her! My concern is that several younger people are getting a vaccine now especially if they are willing to travel a bit bc they know how to check boxes on the interwebs.

I’ve had to help my folks get this figured out. They are 70 and 69 y/o. They still write checks and shite like that

They just put themselves on a list at their doctor’s office and called it a day. I told them they need to do a drive through clinic. I’m having to relay the info to them.

That’s my concern. In the NO metro area, a 30 yr person (who is not a med professional or other higher priority job) can easily get the vaccine pretty quick by clicking a few boxes on the interwebs as long as they are cool with driving about a 100 miles one way to get it.

It absolutely is a problem. The Mississippi system is relatively simple to sign up....if there are doses available. People who aren’t tech savvy don’t really understand the concept of real-time lists. I have several friends who are senior citizens who checked the list one or two times and got freaked out because there were no appointments available. Once I told them that they could keep refreshing their browser, every one of them got an appointment within 15 minutes.

One thing is for certain, if the Government had a hand in it at all, tne process is most assuredly convoluted and unnecessarily complicated. It seems that is often one of the major goals. "Let's make this shite as complicated as possible, and see what happens."

Unlikely. They know someone who can help them sign up.

Concerned with? Not particularly. It’s moving well. In large part because people are checking on friends, family, neighbors etc... it’s not perfect but there’s a lot of professional and personal avenues being utilized.

I’m not sure it’s a big concern. There are still a lot of appointments out there. If elderly were being boxed out I’d say it could become an issue but that doesn’t particularly seem to be the case.

Just check in with folks you think may be missing the boat and offer a hand. The convention center in Nola has 1750 appointments to fill Between Tuesday and Thursday alone, so they can get in essentially immediately (and many locations have openings prior to Tuesday)

The systems set up online in AZ make it very easy for you to sign up others (relatives, etc) who aren’t tech savvy or don’t have easy access to internet.

That’s how I signed my parents up
