re: Is kicking children out of the house when they turn 18, or mess up, a thing of the past?

I was the oldest of 4. I left my house when I just turned 18 because my parents were struggling financially. They were lower middle income with 4 kids in the parochial school system. They didn’t kick me out. I just left to relieve the burden. I got a job, apartment and put myself through LSU.
This is hilariously not remotely feasible anymore.

My sister was 2 years older than me and her birthday is in June. She turned 21 on a Friday, went and got drunk then my parents woke her up at 700am to go do yard work in the heat. She was puking her brains out. I decided I wasn't going to be remotely close to that situation and moved out at 19.
My parents expected that I was going to college or I was going to move out shortly after high school graduation. I think that's reasonable unless there are extenuating circumstances. If the parents are alright with letting the kids live there longer then that's their right to do.

Of course it is.

No one said they don't have the right to do it. Good grief.
The question is whether it's a good idea and in the best interest of the children and the parents.
(Hint, it's not).

I cant imagine how anyone 18 years old could afford to live on their own anymore

Oh no, don't have a conversation with them. They'll be shaking in their shoes!

This. It’s not doable anymore. Check out the rent on a one bedroom apartment that isn’t in the projects. Couple that with car payment/insurance, food, gas, cell phone bill..it isn’t possible. Even if they wanted to.

If you spread out your education, then sure.

Get a roommate, live in a trailer, go to a junior college for the first two years to save money, etc.
Or just join the military out of high school and let taxpayers pay you back by paying for your school.

All three of mine left on their on accord when they graduated HS. The way it should be.

Yep. Another winning strategy.

For a daughter… no
For a son … yes … 18 old enough to find your way

Without government assistance I’m not sure it is. What employers out there are hiring 18 year olds and paying them more than $15-18/hr? You’re talking ~$2000/mo in take home pay. Now add health insurance, gas, rent, utilities, phone, car payment. You could live in section 8 housing and eat off food stamps

I remember this being such a trope growing up "Once you're 18, you're on your own."
My grandfather did this to me then acted shocked when I dropped out of LSU and moved across the country. Didn’t reconcile for 3 years.

That’s great he does that. But I don’t believe that’s commonplace either

BS live with in your means , plenty of money to be made if you want it, health insurance car payment? Were not in the budget or necessary at that age and lived alone. All still possible, sure room up with your friend if possible.
