In the SW, most Walmarts close to an I-10 exit serve as pop-up rest stops/truck stops/camp sites for truckers, RVrs, Van Lifers, drunks, road trippers, etc.
I have met some interesting folks in the Walmart parking lot
. Chick driving a bus around the country. Young couple from France driving from Alaska to Cancun. Brazilian family driving around N & S America in a Mercedes Sprinter. Old hippy dude driving a bus around the US. Even saw, didn't talk, to a dude from TN on a horse drawn covered wagon cross country trip. A lot of times these people will have a website for their journey on the exterior of their vehicle. I am fascinated by these type of travelers.
I think most of these people were just stopping for a day or two, not setting up permanent residence.
The Walmarts in the Permian Basin serve as temporary truck stops for oil/water/sand box haulers. A handful of service trucks and RVs each night.
Yes, I stop at a lot of Walmarts. I have even slept in the car a few times myself for various reasons.

I know some people who #vanlife like rock stars and it makes me really consider it. I know others with astro vans that show up to my door when it gets below freezing

I like traveling through that area. Will have to make it a point to start stopping by Walmarts. Seems like it would be neat to stop in and see what kind of folks are around.

It is illegal to trespass. Even if an area is publicly accessible.

Several of the office spaces are government offices such as recruiting offices for various branches of service.
There are also private business that lease spaces.
The parking spaces are not designated or marked. The lot is accessible to the public, there is no attendant or gate.
