Bro... in spite of my name, I’m as Southern as they come, was born here, never left, love the South. But I’ll admit the Civil War was about it states rights... their right to have slaves! It’s like the first thing in the Confederate Constitution. You can be proud of being from the South and still acknowledge that. And no, I’ve never seen someone wear 1860s clothing in public.

The individuals that would like to see you banned from wearing such items are the same ones fighting for "free speech" and "baby killing". Ironic

Meh. The USofA was arguably equally "treasonous". Washington, John Paul Jones, etc.

Agreed. The contrast is the reason for the treason. Most would argue that the American colonies' cause was just. Only irrational people would argue that the perpetuation of an absolutely dehumanizing institution such as slavery was a just cause.

The colonists had the decency to win, at least.

Even putting aside a decaying institution that was abjectly morally reprehensible, the South lost and took away an entire generation of young men with it.

Yes on both charges.

I used to believe it was much about states rights also. Until a book I read by Dr. Thomas Sowell on the history of slavery lead me to reading the states letters they wrote announcing reasons for the secession. Many mentioned slavery in those letters. You can look them up like k did and read them.

FTR Sowells book is very surprising on some of what I knew of slavery and the origin of ebonics even from north Britain and Ireland (no shite). Great book.

I do also believe you should wear whatever the frick you want.

Slavery was the trigger, but it wasn’t about slavery.

You had two cultural blocs that wanted control over the Federal State, and had two competing visions for the country.

Those rival cultural blocs had existed, arguably, since the colonial period. Jefferson and Hamilton brought it right into the early years of the country. Would it have ever come to war without the existence of slavery? I choose to doubt it.

Sorry but you're contradicting yourself. The Confederacy was literally the USA but with slavery as a constitutional right.

If you truly believe this, you’re not as much of a history buff as you think.

Yeah slavery is awful but we are talking about the term "treason" which is often used to tear down Lee, etc.
