Same on most carribean islands outside of Jamaica/PR/Haiti. Its due to the plantations (mostly sugar) that were once there. Once slaves were freed they took the last name of the plantation. On most of these islands you only had room to suit 2-3 plantations. Hence only 2-3 last names for most of the residents.

I swam with dolphins there and it was badass. Also got to play with a bunch of sea turtles.

10/10 would go back

I can personally attest that every dive trip down there I make certain there is no trash on the ocean floor

It is a luxury island with arguably the most beautiful water and beaches in the world.

If there are better beaches and water, I haven't seen them.

Like most islands, the further you get from the cruise ship area, the better it gets. There are good places to eat, but you gotta get away from the tourist crap.

It does lack some local feel, but is about as safe and clean and "nice" as the Caribbean gets. It actually has industry out side of tourism, which is rare.

Go to Rackams Bar and Grill. Best place that we found to sit outside and eat, have drinks. Rackams Bar and Grill.

What's trashy is starting "Is it trashy?" threads.

They are nice, but not at all stunningly beautiful. There is only one beach that doesn't have a ton of grass that they dredged out.

Grand Cayman is certainly nice, no arguing that, but it is very vanilla.

Anything but your own private island is considered trashy by the OT.

There is some sea grass but last time it was in water starting at 10 feet deep ish, so didn't effect swimming. It was probably 5-6 years ago though.

Made for some good shore snorkeling as there were plenty of rays, turtles, and others hunting the grass beds.

The whole Caribbean is trashy. Find a nice town and a nice resort and you won't know the difference. Your ignorance will ruin a vacation though.

I enjoyed it there. It's pretty expensive in comparison to other islands. You can visit Hell while you are there, too. Pretty interesting.

Places to eat:

The Wharf- get a reservation for around 8:30 and ask to sit next to water. They feed the tarpon (very cool to watch) at 9 pm.

Calypso's- on Bayside, excellent.

Cracked Conch- go there for sunset. great view. Also great snorkeling

Casanova- Italian, in George Town. One of our favorites.

Lighthouse- worth the 1/2 hour drive if you're adventurous.

Reefgrill- solid.

Ritz Carlton & Westin- several very nice restaurants.

Coconut Joe's- go there for breakfast. Roosters walking around.

Chicken, Chicken- great lunch place for rotisserie chicken. In a strip mall, but very good food. We go there every year on the first day.

Sunshine Grill- best hamburgers on island. Walk across street from Westin. Good value lunch/dinner.

Snorkel Spots:

-Eden Rock- that's the name of the spot. It's in George Town and it's right near where the cruise ships are anchored. Park at the Eden Rock dive shop and drop in water right there. Amazing views.

-Cemetery Reef

-Governor's Reef- can easily walk there from Ritz. Near Westin, and right in front of Governor's house.

Grand Cayman is pretty classy. British protectorate and what not old boy. It is much nicer overall than Jamaica

frickin' Missourons. There are hundreds of islands in the Indian ocean alone that blow GC away.
