re: Is Fayetteville, AR a good place to live?

I have relatives who live in the area, they seem to like it OK. They're all lifelong residents of Arkansas though.

Sounds like a recipe for traffic jams.
That would be because we have weak arse Congressmen that can't shite for funding in our state. Then the sloooooow arse construction.
Things are being built, seemingly always 10 years behind the need.
It is continually getting worse.
Point in case. Farmington, a small town right outside of Fayetteville just built a new HS gym on old farmland south of town. A new HS is to be built out there too. The road leading there is a tiny 2 lane road w/ multiple 90 degree turns around property lines.
This road has a heavy traffic load as the town grows out that way, putting a gym and school out there, you'd think they'd improve the road... nope.
A clusterfrick awaits.
That's the biggest infrastructure issue. Fayetteville a town of over 70,000 doesn't have a single East/West road that goes through the town uninterrupted. The other cities up here are laid out much more intelligently. The place has just grown too fast and the officials are just too stupid to plan w/ any foresight or ability to get things done smartly.
I-49 has gotten terrible, they're finally building 6 lanes but we'll need 8 by the time it gets done.

I grew up in Fayetteville and agree with most of the posts here. I moved back 27 years ago and after looking at all factors (housing, schools, access to my work) chose to live in Springdale. NWA has grown a lot in those years.
Each part has its own flavor. Fayetteville is a somewhat liberal University town, decent nightlife, decent restaurants, good arts center, excellent schools.
Bentonville is the home of WalMart, there is new money in this area, great museum, decent restaurants, OK nightlife, excellent schools, good music venue.
Rogers and Springdale are more "workers" towns but both have great housing areas, excellent schools and again decent restaurants. Neither has much night life but there are places to go. A large influx of Hispanics have changed both of these towns but if you want great Mexican food, you come here. As to ghettos, none exist though all four have low rent areas.
Crime is low for the population, access to lakes and rivers is real close. There is a bike trail that runs through all four towns, there are great walking trails in town and excellent hiking within short drives.
Hunting is pretty good, depending on what you want to shoot. Fishing is pretty good for fresh water, bass, stripers, crappie, bream and some great trout waters. Basically you have all the things you'd want in a big city and can still be in the middle of nowhere within 10 minutes. It is a great place to raise kids.
Weather is not as bad as some people say, it does have 4 seasons and they don't handle snow well. Fortunately they don't get a lot. More freezing rain and ice.
My only real complaint is the food scene is kinda boring with limited access to good seafood. Festivals in this area are kinda boring though they do have some killer arts and crafts fairs.
All in all, NWA is a pretty darn good place to live, lots of economic opportunity. Unfortunately there are Hog fans up here but you get used to their inane bluster after a while. Most are good people but you will catch some grief for wearing your P&G attire.

Go for West Little Rock or Conway.

NWA is too far from the coast. Hard to live somewhere that is over 10 hour drive from beach.

That it is. I'm a water lover though. We do have a ton of lakes to choose from that are close by.
and surprised no one has posted photos yet...

I travel to NWA for work and I am always excited when I get to take that trip. The scenery is beautiful and the people are a lot more progressive business-wise vs Louisiana. Every time I make the trip I make sure to check out a new hiking trail. I've never been disappointed. It's truly a beautiful place to live.

I'm s fanatic for clear water. I love trips to Destin and Key West and was mesmerized by Lake Tahoe for this reason. Swimming in Tahoe felt like flying although it was chilly even in July.
I don't guess any of the lakes or waterways in NWA are clear enough to offer visibility beyond 5 or 6 ft, are they?

I'm obviously not a local but the lakes I have seen have been pretty damn clear. Keep in mind I grew up fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin.

depends on time of year. After heavy rains they can cloud up from the streams and sediment from flooded tributaries. Then when the lake turns over it'll cloud back up for a bit.
They're not Tahoe like since most of that water is snowmelt that gradually fills the lake. Our lakes here go up and down w/ the rainfall.

The rapids get big enough on the Buffalo that you'll lose all your gear and watch people dump one after another. Oh, it's pure entertainment until you get cocky and go over yourself.

Those look great. Definitely looks like there's enough outdoors to maybe do a summer vacation there one year.
I trust that the camping is good? California has the most amazing terrain and climate for camping but all the laws and mall cop style camp rangers zap some of the old school fun out of it.

The camping is fantastic, however the climate doesn't beat what I have experienced in California. Just make a trip to the Buffalo River and decide for yourself.

Some nice spots to camp, but it doesn't get that cool at night mid summer.

I've been up there a few different times for xc meets. It's beautiful and the towns seem really nice. I wouldn't mind living there myself.

The water, up by the Beaver Dam, is clear as you will find in the region. I fish up there, for smallmouth, all the time.

Dude. You have to be the biggest troll ever, or the biggest pessimist I've ever met.
Dozens of people, "NWA is awesome!"
You, "Then how come I don't hear about it!?"
Fayetteville DOES get cold...ehh, maybe I should move to Boise instead.
I've lived in Dallas, East Texas, College Station, Fayetteville, NYC, and now the East Bay (CA). I've traveled all over the country and seen tons of places over the last 10 years. When you consider all factors, including cost of living, there's not a place I'd rather live than NWA.
You sound like you need way too much convincing so maybe you should look elsewhere.
