Lots of expensive sports do this. Soccer etc. Everyone is "Olympic Development Team" "All Star" etc. A good rule of thumb is if the parents pay for travel etc it really isn't high level shite. If any good sponsors, state coaches association etc pay essentially whole cost. The parents have to pay a token fee to appease NCAA but I mean like $5 or some stupid stuff.

This is true. My 13yo is playing water polo in the "Junior Olympics" next month.

Nothing wrong with it. Just gotta keep in perspective and realize it's just marketing.

I'd equate Cheer team "national" champions to Travel Ball "World Series" champions.

Last year my buddy was pumped to tell me his son was wrestling in the HS “National Championship”....in Eunice, LA.

It’s all a scam.

To answer OP's question, every competition claims a national champion, no matter the level/quality of competition. This means there are an indefinite amount of "champions"

My niece is involved in dance and I was part of company that put on competitions. Basically each company has a “nationals” and there are a lot of them. Some are really big and some are small. Point is yes there are probably a hundred national champions. It’s just how these companies make money.

Somewhat the same in baseball. My little cousin just won a “World Series” in some tournament in Lafayette this weekend.

Hijack

Knew a guy in college who said while he was in high school he was on the cheerleading team. Got some flack for it of course. But, When they would go to competitions you had to be a cheerleader (or parent) to even enter the hotel. Therefore, the guy to girl ratio was about 500 to 1. Said it was quite a good time.

I was a cheerleader in college. When we went on regional road trips in the bus they made us ride with the dance team too. It was a horrible experience.

The sanctioned National Championships for school and college level are run by UCA/Varsity (Universal Cheerleaders Association) or NCA (National Cheerleading Association). UCA is where most school teams learn and compete, and NCA is for your "all-star" teams. The only competition for high school kids that means anything is the Varsity The National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) in Disney World. The other fluffy "national championships" that are just for trophies include companies like Jam Fest and WCA. Those are just regional events that smaller teams go to to give their kids a chance to earn a "national championship."

Source: Was a cheerleader who worked for Varsity/UCA

ETA: UCA holds their competitions in Disney World, and NCA holds theirs on Daytona Beach. To win either of them is incredible. They are different in that UCA is more what you would call "collegiate" where guys are there to just tumble and stunt and NCA is more "all-star" which includes guys dancing and doing jumps.
