Most vets don't even perform declawing anymore and they're professionals and know what is best, so I guess that answers your question.
Don't do it
Don't do it

Not if it's an inside cat that you will care for.
If it's an outside cat, then yes.

I've had two cats declawed and they were both the happiest animals on the planet. They do it with lasers now so it's a lot less traumatic for the cat post-op, and my second was was running and jumping a day after the surgery, as opposed to having it done the old way where the cat was laid up for a couple of days. Once recovered, both cats were absolutely fine and have lived long happy lives.

It's like a circumcision. If done as little as the child or kitten can be done, then it is not.
But if you are that a-hole hemming and hawing until the boy or the cat is 4? You're an a-hole and it is mean.
And as mentioned, if that cat is ever outside its getting its arse kicked.
Do vets even remove rear claws? I've never seen a cat with all 4 declawed.

I want to buy new furniture, but my wife's cats scratch everything in sight. I want to cut their fingers off, she thinks it would be a horrible thing to do.
Only if they are outdoor or hybrid cats. If they're 100% indoor then it doesn't make much of a difference from a survival standpoint.

No more than spaying or neutering a pet, which most people seem to do without hesitation.

I think it's cruel. If you don't want cats clawing at your stuff, don't have cats. BTW, some cats paws become so sensitive after declawing that they won't use a litter box because it hurts their paws. I would never declaw a cat, that's mutilation!

All cats should be declawed. They are responsible for the extinction of at least 15 species of birds in the US.

I don't know how much it'd really hurt a cat, but I'd imagine it'd be hell pretty much having to relearn how to walk and do other cat shite. And as some others have mentioned, if it does actually get out, without claws it has no chance against predators or other cats.
My advice would be to get a good scratching post, rub in a generous amount of cat nip, and make sure to clip the claws every week or two.
But at the end of the day, adopting a cat from a shelter and clipping its claws is relatively humane compared to a cat living its life in a shelter or out on the streets.
We have had our "inside" cat for about 5 years now. I say "inside" because he pretty much does whatever he wants, spends about half the time, including nights outside. His front paws were declawed but he has no problem holding his own out in the country with plenty of natural predators. And nothing in our house is scratched.

If you feel the need to declaw a cat, don't have one.

Do like I do. Leave the cat outside and it can't scratch up your furniture.

I certainly don't want to spend a fortune on new furniture just to see it get messed up in the first week.
Declaw the stupid cat and tell the wife to dwi.

We have two cats. Both were declawed at a very young age.
Wife is a soon to be vet. Declawing them when they are kittens is fine if they are going to be strictly inside cats. I wouldnt declaw an adult/outside cat though.

Only if you then put them outside.

I hate cats, but I'll welcome a couple feral frickers outside to kill rodents.
Until they start fricking up my cars, then I'm gonna have to get pet hawk.

You want to mutilate a pet because you're getting a new couch?

This. I lol at these people who act like it's torture and cruelty yet the cats I've had that have been declawed have been as happy and carefree as can be. We took our cat in from the street, where he otherwise likely would have died. But no, that's a better alternative to some of these "high horsers" than removing the front claws and the cat living 16 years of luxury and freedom.

It's no different than literally chopping it's balls off

Make it an outside cat. No more fricked up furniture, no litter box, and less mice.
