What's the best source for models, paint, etc these days?

Amazon has a pretty good selection of kits as well. And I buy most of my paints from there as well.

As a kid growing up in the 70’s, I built many. All were muscle cars/hot rods.
I dont think it’s as popular today as it was then.

Check Hobby Towne in BR. As for the motors, get them online. Hell, if you get interested in it again, you'll find there is a lot more to that hobby online than you knew about. MUCH bigger rockets and engines.

Amazon's level of packing doesn't justify kits, had a couple destroyed and paint bottles broken because of their shitty packaging. Kits/paints in the little envelopes?

I order from them all the time (prime membership) and haven’t had any issues.

Making scratch build model rockets is more fun to me. You get to launch them to see if they actually function as designed. I’ve build 2-stage rockets that go out of sight for almost a minute before seeing the parachute drifting down. Launched frogs and lizards as payloads.

Currently building a 3 engine Cluster heavy launcher that I’ll use to launch a large toad 1000 ft in the air.

Hobby Lobby could do a ton more business in models if they’d just start stocking some decent kits. Their selection is pathetically small and most of what they do stock is crappy kits. There are still a lot of companies making good kits that modelers buy. I’m talking about companies like Tamiya, AirFix, Hasegawa, Meng, AFV Club, Italeri etc. we’d gladly buy from Hobby Lobby if they’d just stock them.

It would also help the hobby overall if Hobby Lobby stocked a good selection of better kits. I’d bet the vast majority of kids today who may want to try building models probably get their first kit from somewhere like Hobby Lobby. But when they get the kit home, it sucks so they lose interest.

Same prime membership, but I stopped ordering model stuff from them. After having a couple kits damaged due to shitty packaging, I'll go elsewhere. It's like they just want to use as little as possible and put them in the pouches, when they should be in a box and with plenty of protection. I've put in five complaints and the best was a 3% "rebate." They don't care, and the lack of intelligence in the workers shows.

That's one reason why I like Sprue Brothers so much. They actually care.

One of my fondest childhood memories was going to the model shop on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena CA. But changing times murdered those, just like the newsstands of my youth. Its either bad selection in general hobby stores now, or Amazon.

Yep. Those Level 2 and L3 rockets are insane.

Much more out there then just the Big Bertha and one that snapped a single pic.

I don't think so because the number of new manufacturers popping up turning out fantastic kits along with the old guard manufacturers still turning out quality kits there has to be a demand out there. Now granted the price of good model kits has gone up and it's not the affordable hobby that it was when I was 12 years old but at 54 I don't have a problem with throwing down a 50-100 bucks for a plastic model kit that will give me weeks of entertainment and then satisfaction of seeing my finished product.
If you can get kids off the phone and get them into concentrating on a hobby they might just learn something.

Places to buy kits and supplies: Sprue Brothers,Squadron, Andy's Hobby Headquarters, Mega Hobby,Amazon and E-bay.

My go-to is Sprue Brothers and if you're in the New Orleans area Hub Hobby is still around as a brick-and-mortar store. They are on Airline Drive by Sam's club in Metairie. They don't have the size store that they had when they were up on Washington and Broad but Katrina washed them away and I like to try to patronize them as much as I can.

I went by there the last time we went to NO about 3-4 years ago. Anytime I travel, I always search on Google to see if there is a brick & mortar hobby shop nearby. Really cool place. If I remember correctly I left there with four or five kits.

It’s not the same obviously, but warhammer 40k/fantasy is sort of similar and has a growing fan base. However it’s more of a painting hobby than building/glueing.

Model trains have gone to super detailed models being available ready to run versus having to detail/paint them yourself.

I mostly see guys claim they don't have time to actually model anymore so they buy them ready to run.

Frankly, I think a lot of it, in the model train world anyway, is the factory painted and detailed models are superior to what most guys could finish themselves.

There is a bit of a difference between train modelers and other scale modelers as well. Trains run/operate on layouts which can be pretty large and take a lot of time to build. An operable diorama essentially that may fill a basement.

A military model doesn't operate and if it is part of a diorama it is usually less than a square foot. Building the model itself is the hobby while with trains a single locomotive may be not only one of many, but only a small part the overall layout and running trains.

HO scale $380 locomotive, with sound/DCC, on a somewhat finished layout may give an idea what I am talking about.
