Blocking the number does nothing because the number you blocked is not the scammers real phone number. The scammer use a local non working number to attach to their caller ID. The term is "Spoofing". If you see a call come in that doesn't have a persons name on the caller ID but simply displays the number and a local city it's most likely a scammer spoofing a fake number but not always and this is why it can be so frustrating. Some very rural areas cell phone systems still don't have the ability to display a persons name with their number on caller ID

It's gotten really bad lately. I'm getting 10 plus a day, all with New York area codes. I don't advocate for vigilante justice, but I'd love to see these shite stains impaled on a stake somewhere.
Unfortunately ignoring them doesn't get them to stop. Robokiller doesn't seem to deter them (although it at least keeps your phone from ringing).

Yeah, and they just spoof another one. They have thousands of numbers at their disposal.

This is the answer. I don't know the number they can leave a VM. No telling what my car warranty could be or how many cruises I missed out on.

Legend made a good point that I forgot to mention. Rejecting the call also validates the number as a working number.
So does letting it ring. A bad number kicks an error message.

No, Letting it ring is the best offensive play.
If you decline or block the number the scammers phone systems immediately know that the number is valid.
If you answer, even if you immediatly hang up, they know the number is valid AND they know you are the type of person that answers unidentified numbers. This makes you a potentially vulnerable target especially if you are over the age of 60. The scammers know your age. It pisses me off too, but all of our information is out there for everyone to see.
Just let it ring.
I have three cell phone numbers and I've played around with all the options over the last few years and not answering eventually removes your number from their lists. The scammers are only looking for people that will actually speak with them. If you don't speak with them you can't be scammed.
I have ATT cell service and as much as i despise ATT lately they have been doing a better job of identifying spam calls and alerting me.

Just the fact that it rings instead of saying "This number is disconnected or is no longer in service" means it's valid.
I ignored a suspicious number once and looked it up, and it was a scammer. They called again and I ignored it. Then I set the ringtone to silent. They tried 30 times over the next six weeks before they gave up or got shut down.
They also don't have accurate information because some of the scam calls trace to Medicare scams where I wouldn't be eligible.
The real problem is it's basically free to robo dial. If a live person had to make the call they'd have to be selective.

That doesn't do anything either. 99% of these spam calls are from unique numbers. I've quit even wasting my time blocking because the number almost never appears again.

I’ve got to be getting close to having every number in the 470 area code blocked.
Posted on 7/31/25 at 10:11 pm to FinkyStinger
Don’t worry they also use 470 as the first 3 after the area code now

Not always a non working number. I’ve received calls showing my own phone number

the only way they stop once they start is a disconnected phone. change your number.
do they have an app that rings disaconnected for anyone calling not in the contact list?
