re: Is becoming an RN worth it?

I don't pay anything for my healthcare, which is a huge plus. I have a house that's worth 450k (2k per month). Taxes are higher, but overall I think I'm better off when it comes to pay, work conditions and especially the free healthcare. At home, in Louisiana, it worked my arse off for peanuts and terrible work conditions. I'll retire out here and then move back home eventually.

Isabelle81. Yes, staffing regulations are still in place. Started in Jan 2004. not all hospitals are union, but more and more coming onboard.
And btw, I agree with your comment, don't go into nursing for money...that's the wrong reason!

Go big and get into medical school. Either become top dog in the food chain or get eaten alive

RN BSN in New Orleans here (on my husband's account, heehee). Depends on what you do to determine how much you make. Consistent hours and very difficult to lose your job are definitely pros. Pick up holidays and work nights for more. Work on a specialty unit for more. Definitely go straight for your BSN so you don't have to go to school online for it later. And you can work in tons of settings and take care of tons of different kinds of people. But be wary of how difficult nursing school is, how easy it is to get burned out, and how many hours you'll lose. Not to mention the emotional stress of DNRs, codes, and and how many people ask you for your advice but don't take it...lol on the last one. All that said, if you can take it day by day and work hard, you'd be successful and have opportunities to expand your career in all sorts of ways. Not to mention help people who are relying on you. I can't imagine doing anything else. :)

You do realize physicians look down on other physicians as well right? As there are food chains in nursing, same applies to medicine. So by your logic, everyone should only be neurosurgeons.

Why? Neurosurgery is not where the top medical school graduates go. Derm, Ortho, ENT, Plastics, Urology all have better applicants than Neurosurgery.

Those are obviously more desirable matches for many. I was speaking in terms of public perception. I think most would not understand why derm for example would be more desirable than other specialties.

I also want to say I was told that a doctorate as a requirement to be a Nurse Practicioner is on the horizon. If that was a future desired step.

Depends on the state, it's trending that way now though since CRNA has gone the doctorate route.

I know a few contract nurses. Pretty sweet deal for them. They like to travel and usually have their room and board paid for while under contract. They use the time in between to travel and do things they enjoy.

Travel nursing is what first brought me out to Cali, loved it. Northern Cali is the best!

Agree, an RN has to just about sleep, eat, breathe and never sleep work to make $100K. I don't care if it's a Diploma Nurse or BSN.
