I don't give a frick what you think. I have no reason to lie about it. Nursing salary is not set in stone. It's just like any other profession. You negotiate your salary when you are in position to do so. Again, I have no reason to lie about it.

Nurse, what area are you working in now?

I'm doing infection control now at my hospital. Salaried position, M-F 8-4:30. No nights, no weekends, no holidays, no overtime. No patient care. Making 87K.

I work in surgery. Make $32 an hr. $50 when working on call. shite adds up.

Nursing is one profession you start making good money and have multiple avenues to pursue to make lots of money like CRNA!

So far I really like it. I still can wear my scrubs if I want as well(or dress normal business dress).

What do you think I wear given that choice?

Moving away from the bedside and peds will expand my base of nursing knowledge. Will look good on the resume in the future as well if I get tired of infection control. But so far...I could easily see myself staying in this role for a really long time.

Right, so you negotiated to nearly 200% the state average.

I believe you though because you said you have no reason to lie.

I know the OT lies but man, the nurse that say they make 100k and don't work overtime is damn funny. The median income for RNs in Louisiana is under 60k. Most of the ballers on here double that is hilarious. My wife was an RN. She worked nights, weekends, and was on the NICU transport team with OT and I know what money she made. It's ok that you guys don't really make 6 figures. Funniest shite on here in a while

I finished nursing school in 1994, and first broke 6 figures in 2004. In the years since, I have made substantially more than $100k. Also, I am salary + bonus most of those years, and don't work nights, weekends, or OT except as expected for senior managers.

I do have an MBA, but an RN is required for my position.

Hell yeah I do.

1)I'm not bringing a change of clothes just for happy hour

2)If I go home and change first...I'll be late and miss the happy hour prices

I like to wear my scrubs and leave my stethoscope around my neck in bars.

I wear gym shorts and a scrub top daily. When it's cold I'll wear the scrub bottoms lol! Comfortable clothes!

2080 hours per year really doesn't happen in nursing, unless you work 8 hour shifts. There are almost no hospitals that do 8 hour shifts anymore. Some consider 36 hrs a week full time and that's all that is required while others require 3 twelve hours one week and 4 twelves the following week. If it's night or day shift, the nurse doesn't have much of a life after work.

Correct. Considering the shortage of nurses willing to work in hospitals, any RN with a license and beating heart will be hired.

Long story short, yes it is. Bite the bullet and go for the BSN for more opportunities.

Not out here in AZ. Many hospitals in the PHX metro area are sticking firm to their BSN requirement. They either want you to already have it....or know you are working on obtaining it.

I oriented a soon to be new grad for her capstone clinicals back in Nov/Dec. She was about to get her associates and immediately go back to school for her BSN. For job interviews she had to show proof of being enrolled in a RN to BSN program in order to be eligible for many of the positions she was applying for.

Is agency and travel nursing still as big a thing? I had friends that did several contracts. PHX, Tuscon, and I cant remember where else. One said the apartment complex the agency put him in was 50% travelers.

Not sure. I know the hospital I work at hasn't used travelers in years. They do still use registry/agency nurses.

And yeah...AZ used to have a ton of travel assignment needs. That is how I ended up in AZ in the first place...was a travelnurse.

I'm sure there are still travel assignments...but I would also imagine the "glory days" of travel nursing are over in many areas. Many hospitals facing budget issues....upping staffing ratios to save money with staffing. Those hospitals can't afford to pay the $$$$$ for travelnurses. I was making $40 an hour back in 2005-2006 PLUS a fully furnished apartment with all utilities except cable paid for. So the agency is paying that much to me...how much was the hospital paying the agency?
