New thought: the perfect crime is to smash and grab at a high end jewelry store, scrub the diamonds of all serial numbers, and then start your own jewelry store to sell the stolen murchandise so you get top dollar.

On second thought, this is getting complicated. I'd probably just mug someone.

Just like with making drugs illegal, that way no people can buy them.

If by perfect, you mean great way to spend a few years in prison...then yes, it is.

the perfect crime

What is my perfect crime? I break into Tiffany's at midnight. Do I go for the vault? No, I go for the chandelier. It's priceless. As I'm taking it down, a woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It's her father's business. She's Tiffany. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning, the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada. I don't trust her. Besides, I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard. I have a son and he's the chief of police. This is where the story gets interesting. I tell Tiffany to meet me in Paris by the Trocadero. She's been waiting for me all these years. She's never taken another lover. I don't care. I don't show up. I go to Berlin. That's where I stashed the chandelier.

They press a button or device and the door locks. You cant get out. Might have to end up blasting the door or shooting someone. Cameras everywhere inside and out. Then drive around in the get away car and get stuck in traffic.

Stupid idea.

Lots of jewelry stores have armed people in case of just such an event.

Is Truck Nut Bob who works his second job as a jewelry shop security guard allowed to shoot someone for smashing jewelry shop glass cases if they aren't armed or threatening people?

Ah the "Big Dirty"..... My friends and I have talked about this a lot.... Since the oilfield is garbage.

Smash and grab would work. Do it in Asia where there are less guns and people trust the white man.

Would be easy enough to plan. You only get one shot at the real thing tho.

Perfect crime is a crime where the robbed doesn't even know that they were robbed.

I can't think of a crime that can get someone that much money that quickly with the relatively low risk of being caught like a smash and grab of a jewelry store.

I can

Best way to do it would be to steal a bunch of 24k gold and then melt it down and mold into bricks. You can sell gold pretty easily

Stealing bulk gold >>>>>>>> jewels.

Robbing a bank would be easy. Getting away with it depends on the perp I'd assume.

one out of 4 attempts results in a caught robber.

repeat offenders get caught eventually.

Murder for hire is the best criminal pursuit IMO

This. My uncle and a few of his old military buddies used to have a decent sized hit business in the Dallas area back in the 90's. He could easily pull 100 grand any given month and more if he really wanted. He's out of the business now and living in Arizona but he's still rolling in cash

You can get a million dollars worth of jewelry and be in and out in under 1 minute.

The problem is turning that million dollars worth of jewelry into more than 50k or so in cash.

Stolen jewelry is worth 20 cents on the dollar at most, and any serial numbered pieces (diamonds and watches) usually have to cross a border to even get the 20 cents. The stolen goods database is huge and everyone uses them now, so selling to pawns, local mom & pops, etc isn't even really an option anymore. So you have a huge risk of taking it to Mexico before you even get paid. Also, the shite isn't worth what you think it is due to the markup. The 20 cents is based off wholesale value. Oh, and the guys buying them aren't exactly angels, so you have the risk of getting popped during the transaction too. So let's say you rob a huge AD for Rolex and get all their merch in a risky armed robbery. Wholesale value of $300k would net you at most $60k after it's all said and done. You're putting yourself in a possibly lethal and risky situation three times to get that money. I'm in the industry, so know it well. It ain't all it's cracked up to be. That's why big heists aren't commonplace.

Now, my next door neighbor is ex-FBI (I know, internet "I know a guy" bullshite, but it's true). He said if you rob one bank, they don't even spend many resources looking for you. You can walk up, act like you have a gun in your pocket (it can be your finger, it doesn't matter), ask for money, due to regs they have to give it to you, and then stroll your happy arse on out. Just don't hurt anyone, don't do it twice, and you're fairly good to go.

The secondary market for jewelry is garbage and the value drops by at least 50% from retail.

that really doesn't mean much when you take into consideration that they did not pay for them

I created a program that is inserted I to bank software that extracts fractions of a cent from each transaction. Based on the volume of capital exchanges, we will be rich without anyone even noticing.
