The last time I was on 6th was 1999. Is it like this every weekend?

6th street is about as bad as bourbon. the only difference is there are cops on 6th.

But all the APD cops have silently quit, so they are just people hanging out with uniforms on.

The AA population in Austin in less than 10%. Is this how 6th St is now, or was there some type of Bayou Classic going on there at that time? How can they afford to live there?

There were a couple of events this weekend essentially equate to Essence Festival. A lot of Cadillacs with those wire wheels that stick out 3 feet driving around.

Has it always been like that?

"Dirty Sixth", the bar heavy area between I35 and Congress is rough. That is tourist Austin. People go there to get drunk, and ultimately fights happen. Add the fact that homelessness (a large shelter is/was literally on 7th/red river) and nefariousness (downtown draws trouble) contributes to the chaos downtown.

East 6th was more chill, it's been gentrified similar the ward in Nola next to the interstate. West 6th is closer to Mt. Bonnell, so it's the wealthier local end of 6th (whole foods office, shite like that).

Short Answer - I've lived in Austin for 10+ years, I don't go to Dirty 6th.

eta: If it was Texas Relays, bars on 6th legit close down because of the activity it draws. Relay weekend is just a regular weekend on Bourbon for comparison.

Lines up with the relays
