Being in a finance profession, I hear this sort of phrasing often. It's dumb, I'll warrant, but not uncommon.

you're thinking too much. just add the 0's

55,000 x 1,000,000
that's nine 0's. 55,000,000,000 = 55+nine 0's. 55 billion.

I got a million trillion things I'd rather fricking do...

than deal with the ignorance behind "55 thousand million"...

That's just ignorant... I bet the assholes who say 55B like this also use numbers like "eleventy" and "thirtyteen"

The person claims certain economists and chemists say numbers this way

We deal with very large and very small numbers on a daily basis (pico, nano, micro, kilo, etc.) so let me assure you chemists aren't retarded

It is understandable what this means, but it is not the correct way to say it. The correct way would be 55 billion.

You'll see a variation of this in charts/budgets where the title will be:

Not really, it's basic place value that should have been mastered before upper elementary. A billion is one thousand million...then multiplied by 55 in this case.

I weep for this country.

At 1 Euro = 1.7 US dollars exchange rate

1 billion pennies, or $10 million

= $17 million american

You're losing out on A LOT of money there.

Right?

A European billion is one million million
An American billion is one thousand million (millardo)

I´ll take the pennies

Guys, 55 thousand million is 55 billion. Double fail.

It took me three times to get it.

The 000 in the 55,000 goes in the millions place and not the billions place.

WTF are millions and billions places? Here's how to think about it. Multiply thousand (10^3) by million (10^6) and you have billion (10^9). Thus 55 billion. Simple.
