This was when I fell in love with boxing... Mike Tyson went from March 6th, 1986, to July 7th, 1989 and had 37 wins. That was MULTIPLE fights per month, sometimes as many as three per...

For instance, when he was 19-20, he fought from March 6th, 1985 to March 10th, 1986 fighting one, two, and three times a month to get to 19-0; all with knockouts.

I agree that boxing has since become more about taking falls and throwing fights, etc... (don't worry, MMA is getting there... FACT)

Think about how nowadays boxers go up to maybe two years between fights...

He was always walking to the wrong corner after knockouts

I love Mike Tyson, but he is not the greatest. When he finally fought someone who wasn't afraid him. We figured out he couldn't take a good punch.

Tyson didn't start boxing at 19 but that is of no consequence. He was a dominant champion in a weak division at the time. He had great hand speed but it is hard to place him in the upper echelon because he folded when he faced the elite fighters of his time: Lewis and Holyfield. His excuse is that he lost his focus and stopped training but that is all part of the equation. Ali, who I cannot stand, is likely the greatest heavyweight because he fought in the golden age of heavyweights and also came back to win the title after a prison stint.

Ali was found guilty of draft evasion, stripped of his title and had his license suspended, but he didn't go to prison. He remained free while his case went through the appealate process, with his conviction eventually being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. But you are correct in that he missed four of what should have been his prime years in boxing.

Except for Douglas and Holyfield, of course.

Followed Tyson closely with my dad and my brother - loved those "HBO tournament" days. He was the baddest man on the planet, and the Cus D'Amato Tyson was in the conversation for GOAT. But Tyson was a tortured soul, and when he lost his mentor it was all over. Anyone who thinks the Tyson in those later fights was the real Tyson is clueless.
