Why should this be paid for by anyone but the recipient of the surgery?

There are private insurances that do cover gender reassigment surgery. essentially not consider elective on the basis that it can be part of the whole psychiatric treatment and reduce the higher suicide rate among the population.

Usually there's a prerequisite of having to be on hormone therapy for a year and then having received psychiatric therapy for the year as well along with letters of recommendation from both 2 psychiatrists stating that they are.mentally fit.

I'd imagine Medicaid's requirements are falling in the line as well.

Not saying I agree or disagree just giving some additional background

It shouldn't. No sex surgery other than medical necessity should.

I doubt very many people in Iowa are clamoring for this surgery to start with, let alone who are poor enough to qualify for Medicaid.

It's almost certainly a suit filed by a pressure group that has no impact on anyone, even the supposed beneficiaries.

System is so broke...both structural and financially...that is doesn't really matter to me. I am becoming more convinced it will all imploded soon and no one will have to worry about issues like this as Medicare and Medicaid won't be around.

Shouldn’t be covered. That’s not a medical necessity.
