American-born Hiram Stevens Maxim was the inventor of the Maxim Gun – the first portable, fully automatic machine gun. The Maxim gun was first used by Britain's colonial forces in the 1893–1894 First Matabele War in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
I read about this the other day while studying up on the Rothschild family dynasty.
Rothschild's financed the creation of Rhodesia. Cecil Rhodes, who by all accounts, was a crazy British patriot and his BSAC obliterated the tribesmen with this machine gun. Something like 50,000 killed and his team lost 400 men.
Coincidentally, Cecil Rhodes founded de Beers Diamond company by in large with the help of the Rothschild's. And the names Rhodes should ring a bell, as Cecil created the Rhodes Scholarship.
Truly some crazy shite man.

Interesting. I had forgotten about Rothschild's connection to Cecil Rhodes and the creation of Rhodesia. I'm actually surprised that the British lost that many men against the Matabele. I was under the impression that the fight was really no contest since the British were much better armed. I can remember when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe back in 1980. I was sixteen at the time. It's hard to believe that Robert Mugabe is still hanging on at his advanced age. Hopefully, once he kicks it the new leadership won't be nearly as corrupt or ruthless as he is.

I won't hold my breath.
Also on the Rothschild front...the British government is still paying interest on loans from the Rothschild's dating back to the Napoleonic War.
Remarkable family.

Didn't Rochschild make the famous statement, "The best time to buy is when there's blood in the streets?"
That is indeed amazing that Britain is still paying interest on loans that old.

Yes, he is credited with that. However, he wasn't responsible for the spread of misinformation after the Battle of Waterloo, much to the contempt of many conspiracy theories.
The family did make a killing off the Napoleonic War, Rothschilds financed both sides of it.
The patriarch, Mayer was a fricking genius. 5 sons spread across the most influential European cities. Nathan being the most prominent, but with the other 4 brothers, it was unheard of at the time.
I think Mayer was quoted saying, 'if my son's didn't want war, there wouldn't be war.'
Some financial historians have argued, with a lot of credit that the War of 1812 was fought over the charter for the Bank of the US not being renewed in 1811. Rothschild wanted to bankrupt the USA.
The charter was renewed again in 1816...Rothschild got what he wanted.

I took 4 years of French in HS. When I was a senior, We had a freshman in our class because she already spoke fluent French (Idk why she didn't take Latin or Spanish instead, but whatever). We were reading French news articles about the sale of Napoleon's penis one day, and this girl (very young and innocent) raises her hand, and (in French) asked, "But Madam, isn't it just like a bone now? How do they know It's really a penis?" The whole class died laughing and our teacher couldn't teach for like 10 minutes. Everytime she'd try, she'd start laughing again.
