Everyone living within BR city limits should be forced to ride CATS buses.

How would that solve the problem? Most of the traffic is from 18-wheelers driving through and commuters from Central/Zachary, LP, and the AP

BR politicians are keeping a loop from Being built through Ascension?

So, in effect what you do is move the beginning of the traffic jam back to about Ramah.

There is literally no need for the loop to swing that far South. BR politicians are stopping the northern loop while ensuring that I-10 stays one lane coming off the bridge because in order for it to be widened, George's (owned by 2016 mayoral candidate Smokey Bourgeois) would have to be moved. Also, there is significant political resistance from the neighborhoods around I-10 in Old South Baton Rouge.
All this whily St. George NIMBY's are trying to keep it from being around Burbank Drive with a bridge near LaBoerge as intended. Burbank is where the original loop was supposed to go, with a bridge at Brightside, but that got killed by NIMBY's as well.

I have found a good way to avoid traffic in BR is by not having a job there or living there.

quote:Along those same lines, I've thought for years that the EB movement off of the bridge should have a solid white line and a "Stay In Lane" sign. What happens is that people see the "Exit Only" lane for Washington St., and it psychs them into thinking that they have to merge over after the split. Truthfully, there is no reason to merge, whatsoever. There are no left exit ramps, and you do not have to exit at Washington if you're not in the far right lane. This will not solve the traffic problem, but it will push back the beginning of the gridlock at that point from 2:30pm to maybe 4:00-4:30pm. It's a dangerous weaving movement as it is now, because idiots coming from the bridge think they have to get over quickly, and idiots on 110 won't stand their ground and disallow them from merging. So there is a lot of unnecessary breaking and lane-changing.
Coming off the bridge EB at the 10-110 split, the sign points to the left lane for I-10, right lane for I-12. So everybody going to NOLA stays in the left lane and it backs up when the right lane is still moving. The actual 10-12 split is several miles further on. Change the sign to reflect that, and the bottleneck speeds up.

So taking tens of thousands of cars off the road wouldn't help traffic?

If they would have built a bridge in Brusly or Plaquemine the amount of traffic would be lessened on I10. Instead the politicians decided our tax money would be well spent if we put one in the middle of bum fricking St. Francisville.

Not when most of those cars aren't on the interstate to begin with. BR's traffic problems are two-fold: lack of a bypass for interstate traffic, and a lack of inter-connectivity of surface streets.
Getting all the BR people into CATS busses would alleviate the latter to a degree, but it would not help the former at all, which is easily the biggest problem.

Why not utilize Sunshine or Veterans?

Please... Baton Rouge is one of the worst places for interstate hoppers. People that need to go from one street to another will hop on the interstate, go down a couple of exits and hop off.
It's not like all that interstate traffic is people passing through.

I've posted an idea before in a traffic thread. I suggest that people who live OUTSIDE EBR but work INSIDE EBR be penalized for not carpooling. Basically pay for parking at their place of employment(say for example for govt buildings/companies with over 50 parking spots) unless they have more than one occupant.
Funds go to roads, reduced traffic on 10/12, and pays to run itself(parking $$ collections administrations and such).
eta: it's no secret that thousands of state employees as well as OLOL/Womans/BCBS come from AP and LP every weekday morning.

Sunshine is a traffic clusterf&^k in and of itself and would in no way address East/West 18-wheeler traffic coming from I-12. Also, there is the fact that the sunshine bridge is very out of the way for connecting infrastructure to it. Where does this "loop" go once it gets to the other side?
Ad D-ville, unless there is a new corridor to and from the bridge that connects to I-10 on the West Bank, it's essentially useless except for those coming from New Orleans who are heading to Lafayette, and they would likely take US-90 anyways.
Honestly, I don't think a new bridge is actually necessary. I think a "northern loop" needs to be built that connects I-12 to the old bridge. I think the Old Bridge needs to be widened to 3 lanes with it then connecting to I-10 right past LA-415.
In Baton Rouge, I-10 East needs to be widened from the 10-110 split to Acadian to make it two lanes coming off the bridge and 4 lanes wide at Acadian (the 5th lane comes in at college). That would make the Washington Street exit no longer taking an entire lane coming off the bridge with it, alleviating much of BR's I-10 problem.
Finally, I would extend LA-415 south, building a second bridge over the Intracoastal Canal, and reuniting with LA-1 somewhere near Brusly.
As for Veterans, it's a great resource, but it is out of the way. Most of the traffic is either coming from I-12 or points south. Veterans, being so far north, is an extra trip for these people. It wouldn't be that bad of a detour, though, if there was a faster, more direct route from the New Roads side of the bridge to I-10.

4 lane Nicholson from the bridge to Gonzales. Build another bridge in St. Gabriel. That should take 20% of cars off the interstate during rush hour.
