In your opinion, what management style produces the "best" leader?

A) The Nick Saban
process/details, relentless, outcomes, impersonal

B) The Les Miles
big picture, balance, growth, accessible

C) ???
?, ?, ?, ?

Hard to argue the success of The Saban, but is it sustainable and healthy?

The Les Miles has experienced success, too, but is it too tolerant of the occasional disappointment and soft?

Is there another successful leadership style that departs from the two?

Or is it even possible to merge both A and B (and C, if you like) styles?

I'm a huge fan of "outcomes". Like I'll take 5 national championships to 1. Call me crazy

This, but add in a good personality and genuineness. You got all these—you rule the world, whatever field you’re in.

Both "styles" are closer than you think. CLM was perfectly willing to get rid of players who didn't measure up. He wasn't running a rec league program, he was consistently very near the top, just not at the very top.

The Saban style doesn’t work everywhere. In a professional setting, maybe at some office, or as a principal, he would have to adapt. At Alabama, the buck stops with him. His system works to perfection there. But bringing that much intensity to every environment doesn’t work. You can’t work that way if you are a principal at an elementary school

The Les way obviously isn’t perfect. There doesn’t need to be any elaborating on it.

Both methods have their faults, and both can be highly successful.

There other coaches with his style that don’t have 5 titles.

Everything has a shelf life. Eventually the magic stops working for everybody. The lucky ones step down before it happens.

Bobby Knight is what happens when the Saban management style goes south.

Depends on the game. I am a “cheerleader” manager, I catch more flies with honey. My very aggressive counterpart gets her way initially, but people despise her strongarm tactics and refuse to help in the future. It depends what is needed and the circumstances.

Well the example you gave shows that it is sustainable. It comes down to the leader. Not their style. People can me effective in many different ways

I want a personable, knowledgeable Nick Saban who genuinely cares about his employees and students and has the wherewithal to express it. Actually worked for a principal like this, makes the job easier and results in well-rounded students who also kickass at state testing. Win-win.

C) The kind of small business owner - I don't know, let's say he owns a roofing company - that trusts his employees enough to use whatever tactics are necessary to get the deal done.
