Either 456 or 45236. Nothing else is correct. You can try to include the phantom cut but even then it's just not really adding anything to the series.
45236 is the machete order. You can probably find a full explanation at various sites for why it's awesome. The jist of it is that 1 sucks and doesn't fit in with the series at all. 2 doesn't work as a start to the story for a new viewer. 1-3 watched first ruin the storytelling of 5 by revealing that Darth Vader is Luke's father. The plot flow of 1-3 or 2-3 viewed before 4-5 is just bad too.
So 4 introduces the real plot line of the series to a new viewer: Rebels fighting against the evil Empire. They end on a good note, we've met the characters, etc. Now 5 kicks the good guys in the nuts and we find out that the bad guy is the good guy's father. New viewer now watches a flashback of 2 and 3 to see how things got to be this way. Ends 3 with everything going to shite and now starts 6 where Luke's story from 4 and 5 and Vader's story from 2 and 3 conclude in an epic fashion.

When I introduced them to my wife we watched them in the released order.

It's been a long time since I watched them(and I don't really remember watching 1-3 at all). So I will also do a rewatch so I know what's going on before 7 premieres.

4-6 are the best ones. 1 and 2 are not as good, 3 is better than 1 and 2 but not as good as 4-6.
But having said all that, to get the full story of Star Wars, you've got to watch them all and if you've never seen any of them, do it in order from 1 through 6. Yeah 1-3 are not that great, but they set up what happens in 4-6.

This is the correct answer.
For 4, 5 and 6 I suggest watching the "Remastered" series by a fellow who goes by "harmy". They are as close to the true original versions that you can get. Han shoots first, for example. The official versions available have all kinds of cutesy CGI crap that did not exist in the originals.
It does take quite a bit of work to get this though, you have to download about 80GB of files and stitch them together. But the result is glorious.

4,5,2,3,6 (1 is optional and really plays no bearing on the rest of the movies.)
Basically, you watch Star Wars and Empire, find out Vader's claim that hes Lukes father, then go back and see the backstory, Vaders fall, Vader becoming Vader, then spring forward to see how it all ends up.

I debated going in chronological order, or even in the machete order. I settled on going with the way I had seen them.
