(4)(a) When committed by a person lawfully inside a dwelling, a place of business, or a motor vehicle as defined in R.S. 32:1(40), against a person who is attempting to make an unlawful entry into the dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle, or who has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle, and the person committing the homicide reasonably believes that the use of deadly force is necessary to prevent the entry or to compel the intruder to leave the premises or motor vehicle

You can shoot somebody trying to steal your car, while you are in it. You will be risking your arse if you shoot somebody trying to steal your car while you are walking back to it after shopping in Wal Mart.

But what's the point of this thread? Because I know it wasn't just to quote a law.

Should be able to anywhere in this country.

That you can't in some places is, well, fricking sad.

The key language here is “reasonably believes”.

Not in Louisiana. Your car is an extension of your home. Perfectly legal to conceal a firearm in the car.

Best to let the cop know you have it though if you get pulled over and he starts being nosy around your car.

In this case you can shoot twice and make sure you got him.

Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.

But you’re correct.

Depends on your state. In AL, it is definitely illegal to conceal the weapon in your car without a CCL.

You have to have the firearm locked away (in the trunk or locked glove box/console) and it cannot be loaded. In fact the ammo has to be separated in a different compartment and the firearm has to have a locking device or be stored in a case with no ammo in reach if you're transporting a firearm WITHOUT a CCL.

ETA : This doesn't apply to you if you're on your own land or your fixed place of business.

Don’t link to old laws. The average person isn’t going to have the tools to figure out whether it’s still applicable. In this case, it is, but best to be avoided, especially considering the statute was amended in 2014.

I guess I just assumed this was a common sense law throughout the United States, but I have learned that it's not. In Minnesota, if someone breaks in and starts stealing your shite evidently all you can do is watch them..

In Louisiana it's certainly not illegal.

Well it should be legal to shoot carjackers.

What do you think they’ll do to you?

If I remember correctly, when this law was passed there had been a rash of carjackings throughout the state. Amazingly carjackings became nearly nonexistent after a couple of of those jackasses were shot in the face!
