One of the many reasons why the Louisiana colony was actually a failure. The Germans (and their work ethic) who settled in what is now St. Charles Parish actually saved the lazy and worthless in New Orleans from starving to death.

I descend from that man. He was a genius! Came here himself eventually. Lost so much of the King’s money on the Louisiana business, he had to go to London. Lost their King’s money too on something or other so was persona non grata everywhere on the continent.

May parents used to say they emptied the jails in France and sent them to US. Irishmen came to the US in droves during the potato famine back in Ole Arlind... seems they all drifted down south.
