Most people are dumb. Citing popular opinion isn't the win you think.

Let me get this straight. When you see that 94% of people disagree with you, do you think to yourself:

a) 94% disagree with me. Maybe I should reevaluate my opinion on this. It's possible I'm the one with the bad take.

b) Even though 94% say I'm wrong, I'm sure I'm right and all those people must be idiots.

Ever consider there might be some sampling bias asking this on TD?

What would that sampling bias be? Please elaborate on the groups and causes of their bias?

I'm shocked that 94% of grumpy middle aged fat guys agree with a post made by a grumpy middle aged fat guy! I'm not going to reevaluate my stance on something so trivial because of it.

95% of black people vote Democrat. I'm not hopping on any bandwagons with you or anyone who chooses right and wrong based on popularity.

You dont think a board populated with middle aged white southern dudes might have a similar perspective.

Just like if you posed this question to a bunch of 20-25 y/o people who either work in service or know people who do, youd get a very different response.

Also, the other guy is right. Just hit "no tip" and be done with it. The fact this gets so many of yall upset speaks to yalls own issues.

Of course. If you asked those people if they should get $100,000 per year of free universal basic income from the tax payers, they'd say "yes" as well.

You don't ask the person who stands to personally gain from the benefit. You ask the people who have to provide the benefit.

Some people are just disgusted over the entire concept of tipping, and get super angsty whenever they're at any kind of restaurant. OP is definitely one of those people.

People have a weird need to not just be fake outraged, but to be fake outraged and make sure they tell internet strangers about how fake outraged they are.

That is exactly what this thread is, but on top of that, it's fake outrage that is entirely unnecessary. There is nothing to even be mad or even fake mad about with this subject.

Yeah you don't get inflation and the cost of doing business rising.

This discussion has zero to do with inflation or rising costs, I'm not sure if just popped into this thread, but you're having a completely different discussion not relevant to this one.

Well actually...

If you wanted the best sample, you'd ask a subset of people who aren't affected by it either way since both sides will be biased in either direction.

Restaurants run on thin margins. They can't even afford to pay their servers minimum wage.

This is not a random sampling of people. The vast majority of posters here fit a specific demographic group.

They pay min wage here. Plus tips.

They can't pay below 10.30 or whatever it is, plus tips.

What the frick does this have to do with why your upvote/doenvote rate is not a product of random sampling?

YOU are the one with comprehension issues.

So a server at a mom and pop local restaurant makes $10.30 an hour? What do they charge for a sandwich? Salad? Steak?

He's basically saying the 94% rate of upvotes to down means something in this instance, but doesn't mean anything if you ran a poll with other sample sets that wouldn't give him the same results he wants.

Or more, yes. Alaska is very worker friendly and expensive.

They make almost 15 in Portland. It's 16.50 to 18.69 in Seattle depending on whom you work for.

Eta....my tipping has radically changed because of these wages.

Not basically, he IS saying that, while simultaneously ignoring the fact that neither poll would be trustworthy.

Would hate to see menu prices.

Restaurants are having to get smart.

The place my wife used to manage used to buy smoked pork from a distributor just for their nachos. They've expanded their menu and purchased a smoker trailer. It'll save them about 40% in meat costs and they have way more options.

I'm trying to convince him to start smoking more meats and selling catering tray packages.
