I am mixed on this one. Like all good Southern Coastal boys, I was a good sailor, excellent fisherman and good water skier. I was decent as scurffing too, I could wind surf but was never my thing. All those skills particularly water skiing makes you a terrible snow skier for some reason. ( I want to turn into cuts. Etc and go way way too fast for my skill level, greens and blues. ) One broken hand and a lot of spectacular falls. My skies are typically 100s of yards away. I think I would have done better on the snow board but my wife is convinced I will kill myself and will not allow it.
On the other hand, I love the mountains and the cool crisp air etc. love watching the skiers come down the mountain out the window or the deck, while drinking some hot applejack moonshine or something similar.
We took a snow Mobile ride in Aspen a few years ago and it’s ridiculously beautiful. Would love to hunt it fish in the snow etc.
So I agree that snow skiers are mostly dick heads, but the experience can be enjoyable

It’s overrated if you’re out of shape and/or not athletic.

Usually go to Vail but booked late last year for Mardi Gras and went to Crested Butte. Split a 4 bedroom with another family and spent far less per day then the last time I went to Disney and it was ski-in/ski-out.. If you are willing to stay further out and take a shuttle to ski, if you get your passes way before, and find the best rental deal it need not break the bank.
Disney is QUESO NATION with too many matteroffacts for my taste. I like being around the ski crowd. Better people, period. Disney is nothing but a gaudy, overpriced version of a Carnival Cruise, which itself is merely a crass, budget-busting rendition of a Chuck E. Cheese.

I’ve been snow skiing about 5-6 times, and if I could afford it, I’d do it every year or more. To me, it’s one of the most enjoyable things I love to do outdoors.

TLDR, "I'm broke, out of shape, and suck at skiing."

It seems like you signed up for an amusement park ride and ended up playing a sport.
Skiing is hard. Learning to ski is hard and is a lifelong pursuit.
The real genius of skiing is this: a few weeks ago I skied with a 75 year old and a 7 year old. I’m 40. We skied the tree line and moguls of black runs all day.
There isn’t another physical activity I can think of where a 7 year old, a 40 year old, and a 75 year old can all participate together as relative equals in ability.

I don’t understand how out of shape one has to be to not be able to cruise down long green runs
There’s even a beer and food stop at the top, bottom, and sometimes middle
Makes me feel better about myself

I agree with OP. The last ski trip I went on, I mailed it In after day 2. shite was not fun. Now snow tubing, I could do that shite all day

Actual skiing is really fun. The sounds, rhythm, and motion are amazing of gliding over fresh snow. That will account for about 20 minutes of a day spent freezing in lines, wearing uncomfortable gear, avoiding out of control nuts, and eating terrible food. All at an exorbitant price.

Pizza will never work at anything more than slow speeds. Learned that the hard way. Hockey stop and weighting/unweighting of edges is the key.

Learned that the hard way.

First real green slope after learning on the bunny hills all morning. Barreled straight down it like a runaway rocket and nearly bulldozed a mom and her 5-year-old.
Tried the wedge thing and it did nothing.
Panicked and did sort of an NFL QB slide before I hit someone. Because of that, I accidentally learned how to shift my weight and turn for real.

can tell who’s been skiing maybe once or twice in this thread, and maybe only or twice skiing at ski resorts in the eastern part of the US

LOL, jackass. Family house in Snowmass for decades. Also skied Tahoe back when it was Squaw. Go fly a Cessna.

OP is a brave one posting this on the OT ballers board. If there's one thing people who think they're rich don't appreciate is their silly status symbols pointed out to them.

i generally hate everything cold, but loved skiing when i did it. If snowplow or pizza doesn't work for you, you're doing it wrong. i water skied for years, and the toughest transition was realizing that actions had the opposite effect. water skis slow when you lean back. Leaning back on snow skis lights the afterburners. you have to lean forward all the time. the tip that helped me make the transition is "use your toe button." press the right toe button and you turn left. press both, and you stop in a v.
the third time out, there was a former ski instructor from vermont in the group. by the end of the first day, we were all parallel skiing, and the fun increased exponentially.
