And let's say you were smart and were insured up the wazoo...
Would you rebuild in the same area or go far away?
I am afraid so many of these businesses never re-open in the same spots, and so many downtown areas that have been revitalized over the past 30 years are going to return to slums that were rampant in urban areas in the 1970's. Empty storefronts, food deserts, no tax base to support local schools, etc.
There are alot of younger people here who have only seen that reality on old movies. I'm barely old enough to remember that reality of downtown urban areas.
I fear if this doesn't stop immediately (and it may already be too late in some towns) that these communities are setting themselves back literally 40 years.
No bailout or insurance money will fix this. It will replace inventory and provide some startup money to reopen, but if they reopen somewhere else, that community is still screwed.

I wouldn’t have built in those areas to begin with.

They would not have touched my store unless they wanted to leave on a stretcher.

You know, that reminds me, it could even be a situation where insurance companies won't insure in certain zones, mortgage companies won't lend in certain areas. Just like the 1970's. New laws will have to be made to force them, or otherwise prop them up on their losing investments.

It’s hard to respond if that wasn’t your home/ way of life to begin with. I didn’t grow up in a big city and get sick of being in them after a few days. I just like some space and don’t see the appeal.
For someone who has always lived in an urban area I’d imagine they have similar trepidation about moving to the suburbs/rural areas.

With your track record for predictions, touching your store might cure Oweo's legs.

How profitable was the business?

Business insurance doesn’t cover rioting and looting.
After the Coronavirus shut down and now damage to store fixtures and inventory stolen/ destroyed, a lot of the mom and pop stores are not going to reopen most likely.

Let's say you had a special rider that specifically covers it, your BIL is in the insurance biz and slipped it through underwriting.

I’d become woke, thank the rioters for the cultural enrichment and join The Holy Blue Church by getting in line, voting for Democrats and staying woke for the rest of my natural life.

If this was the case, then no I would not rebuild in that area and most likely not even in that same state.

Someone explain to me how burning down a black-owned business helps the BLM cause. Target is one thing, but they were going after black owned liquor stores, bars and other businesses. Makes no sense to me. It's the "I'm in the gutter, so I'm going to bring you down, too" attitude.

Many dedicated activists worked hard to get stores into underserved areas. All that work got destroyed this week. THe insured stores will not be able to get the insurance to reopen and those uninsured will not be able to afford to reopen.
I would also add there had been a trend away from inner city stores looking like prisons with the bars and cashiers behind bulletproof glass. That will come back from any store that reopens.
