With those options I probably pick Nashville and maybe Raleigh/Charlotte. Most likely would be Nashville all the way.

Big city convenience, smaller city feel. Lived in South la for 30 years, moved here a year ago and love it.

I went to Chattanooga last weekend and it was pretty cool but there is a chicken plant or something downtown that smells absolutely horrible. I can only imagine that it's even worse in the summer.

I would say Atlanta, Nashville, and Asheville would be great suggestions depending on what line of work you're in and what you're into. I don't have kids so I can't comment on the schools.

Would probably throw Greenville,SC in the mix.
Pretty nice here, lot's to do nearby.
Mountains 30 mins away, beach 3-3 1/2 hrs away.
