Hell, I'd even take New Orleans over NYC.

Compared to the cesspool of taxation and anti-freedom over regulation that NYC is, I agree with this list on that principle alone as far as choosing a city to live in goes.

It's okay. Lots of things to do. At $300 per night for a hotel, there are a lot of other cities that I would visit before I booked anything more than a long weekend there. Just about all NYC has to offer can be gotten in another city with less hassle.

NYC is amazing. Booked another trip for the wife and I this spring. 4 nights. $1200 total including the flight.

The sheer amount of mom n pop stores, restaurants, museums, parks, random shite can be a bit overwhealming for a country bumpkin like myself but no other place in America takes it to that level.

I just wish NYC was further south. After one year living up north screw the winter.

But when it has good weather it's pretty awesome.

Hell, even the food in the street carts is amazing... Biryani Cart at 6th Ave. and 46th, in particular.

When did you become the ambassador of NYC? You went there for New Years eve and hated it.

I didn't hate it... I just didn't want to go to Times Square for the ball drop because it was too crowded.

The rest of the trip was great, as it always is.

No way I'm reading this whole thread tonight, but just skimming the first couple of pages I saw a few of the stereotypes listed that I expected to see on my recent trip. I admittedly only have a week experience in the city, but everyone I talked too was extremely friendly. The few times we asked for help people would actually stop what they were doing and give us clear, concise directions.
I didn't spend any more on food than I do at home or on any other vacation I've ever taken. It's one of those things you can spend as much or as little as you'd like. Also, had to pick up some stuff after we got there that was inadvertently left at home, and the prices on everything were comparable to anywhere else I've been.
Also, after spending the first day learning the subways, we had absolutely no problem getting around. You're never more than a 10 or 15 minute walk from a station.

I loved visiting there.

I wouldn't mind living there for 3-6 months. But I'd get sick of it. However, If I was a millionaire it might be nice.

I have no desire to go there. If I'm gonna visit a huge city, I'll go international.

not going to read all of this thread - is that a top water bait or something like a lucky 13 you just threw out? BTW - my Jewish wife and I make at least 2 trips a year back to her home land (Queens).

Greatest?

I prefer places with beautiful mountains and lakes over some concrete jungle.

I visited year with my wife who had a conference. I'd just walk the city and look at neat places I'd find online. There are certainly places there is like to live. But only as a 20-something. Couldn't imagine having kids there. Plus financially, I'd constantly feel underwater. Rent would liked kill me. You could eat and live for a reasonable price, but a 1 bedroom for 3k a month puts a hurting on my wallet and I actually feel like I do pretty well where I live now.

is your only criteria for how great/entertaining a place to live is, its taxation and regulation?

When I visited I encountered no rude people the entire time.

Friend and I sat next to a guy from Queens on the plane who told us how bad Manhattan was (where we were staying) the whole flight. As soon as we land, the guy behind us gets us proceeds to tell us that guy doesn't know what he's talking about, compares NYC to a drug that we'll need again after visiting once, and offered us free tickets to the Mets who were the only team in town that weekend.

We walked all over the place and never once had anything rude said or done to us.

We loved the city and enjoyed all of the people we met and encountered. Can't wait to go back.

the whole "NYC people are rude" is largely myth and largely butthurt from fat southerners who simply don't understand that some people keep to themselves or are in a hurry and don't have time to tell you how to get to the nearest krispy kreme

furthermore, many people in manhattan are transplants from all over the country and are more than happy to chat with you

You'd rather visit Houston, San antonio, and Denver over nyc?

That's crazy

I hate Miami but at least can see how it would appeal to some
