at the airshow at barksdale a few years ago they had a dogfight, and the annoucer said how the mustang took advantage. I dont remember what he said though lol. I do remember seeing it and instantly thought of that when I saw this thread, hence my answer.

Stealth fighter...You know they had that shite back then.
Germans had a prototype. Would've worked.
Gimme a Corsair or an ME-109.
Edit: Missed one comment and didn't see the zero mention. I was wrong.

As quoted in Jim Rearden’s book “Cracking the Zero Mystery,” Marine Captain Kenneth Walsh described how he used information from the Zero test flights to finish the war with 17 aerial victories over Zeroes: “With [a] Zero on my tail I did a split S, and with its nose down and full throttle my Corsair picked up speed fast. I wanted at least 240 knots, preferably 260. Then, as prescribed, I rolled hard right. As I did this and continued my dive, tracers from the Zero zinged past my plane’s belly. From information that came from Koga’s Zero, I knew the Zero rolled more slowly to the right than to the left. If I hadn’t known which way to turn or roll, I’d have probably rolled to my left. If I had done that, the Zero would likely have turned with me, locked on, and had me. I used that maneuver a number of times to get away from Zeros.”
It helped he was flying a Corsair and not a P-40.

B-17 Just to honor all the young men(boys) who flew and went down in them. A Veteran I knew, a tail gunner. was the only one to get out after being shot down over Germany. Was a POW.

There is only one answer: P-47 Thunderbolt.

it was truly amazing what those young men did with minimal training and experience, some awesome guys, with a very low life expectancy performing some incredibly heroic acts, and then if they survived, right back to doing what they were doing before the war as if were just another simple task they were asked to do

For the P-51 fans, depending on your location ans willingness to travel, I can turn you on to an opportunity to make this dream come true in April.

B-17 first for my Grandfather, then a P-51 for me.

Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II,[7] and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair.

It's been a dream to get in a P-38 over blue water so will go with that. Non American prob early to mid war Bf109.
A joy to fly from my IL2 days was the P-39 Airacobra. The engine was behind you and was like driving a VW in the sky.

Man I'm conflicted over this
Corsair, P51, or B-17, P-35
