Fun fact - Chuck Connors (actor who played the Rifleman) is one of only twelve people who played in both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball League. But he didn't do very well in either so he decided to give acting a shot.

He also had an aunt who lived in Tuscaloosa. He came to visit back in the early 60s and the whole family went out to a movie at what had been a segregated, black theater.
When the kluxers and other nuts found out he was in there they surrounded the theater. The police had to escort him out to keep him from getting mobbed.

I love the old shows like Rifleman, Gunsmoke and Bonanza. I like to see all of the young actors and actresses when they were just starting out. So many great names and familiar faces.

I had a friend that played minor league baseball on a team in Havana with Chuck Connors. Joe DiMaggio's brother Dom was on the team too. My friend, John Welaj, showed me a team picture and pointed them all out.

Chuck was the celebrity guest when a Blockbuster opened in Shreveport in the 90s. A local guy won a drawing to have dinner with him.
After dinner, one of Chuck's folks told the guy Chuck (who was in his limo) wanted to speak to him. The guy walked over. Chuck wanted to bum a smoke.

Must have been the real early 90's since he passed away in 92. Age 71 is too early to depart. Lung cancer is a bitch. Ya'll keep sucking on those nail coffins, though.

I see references to it in the Shreveport Times dated November 1990. Can't open them without a subscription.
I think he already knew that he was sick, which is perhaps why the "bum a smoke" anecdote was so memorable.
