Wait.... So, the entrance to the house is on the top of a hill. The bottom of the house sure appears to be not on the hill.
B+ for the drawing though.
Out of curiosity, am I correct in assuming this home is (was) in the X flood area?

Even if you're not in a flood zone? Or do you like your chances after this event?
No. If my house somehow gets flooded..Everywhere within 20 miles is under water...and not just 4-5 feet.
I'm right at the highland/kenilworth intersection. Water didn't get to within a mile of my house luckily. Walden down the hill got water from wards creek but only the houses on the creek itself.

If spanish lake wasn't drained in 2009, alot of burbank/highland would have gotten crushed

It also compounded issues for people right across Bayou Manchac. I got a buddy that lives back there and as others are finishing gutting. they are still looking at water

I know...the basin saved me but folks on the other side are really hurting.
Terrible.

Didn't flood. Went ahead and bought it last week. $360. No biggie.

You should buy insurance for risks that you cannot afford to replace and/or self insure.
Would that include legal insurance, in case you are sued and can't afford the legal fees or awarded damages?

So who's added comprehensive coverage to their liability only policies?

I'm not in BR, and wasn't affected by the Houston Flooding; but I'm getting flood insurance anyway.

Sure homeowners liability, auto liability, malpractice, errors and omissions, etc....all "legal" insurance

Depending on your situation, sure.
Are you suggesting you have no insurance of any type?

My house didn't flood from the backwater. But my streets always flood during a heavy rain. And if another heavy had hit during the crest of the backwater (as radar and forecasts indicated could happen), then I'm not sure my place would have survived. I'll check into the cost and make a decision based on that.

That area is 65' and drops to only 5' on the south side of highland, the Mississippi would have to go 35 feet beyond flood stage for the area to flood. New Orleans, Morgan city, everything in the original pre-levee Mississippi river flood plain would be gone, it was named Highland Rd. for a reason.

No I'm suggesting that carrying flood insurance in an area that did not even come close to flooding this time (or ever) is similar to carrying legal insurance for someone who does not carry an undue risk of being sued. It's just the first type of insurance I could think of that was similar in the way that it protects against something exceedingly unlikely but that might have the same effect: a big financial hit comparable to a couple years' salary.

Not quite.
Highland/Kenilworth is in the 40' range, and it drops to 15' or so where Bayou Fountain runs below the ridge. That big wetlands area along Burbank is in the 15'-20' range.
Still enough of a difference to not make me worry on the high side of Highland, but there's no 60' drop, and it's not 35' above Mississippi flood stage.
