At the recent district BETA quiz bowl competition, BRMHS was leading the pack. During the final round, after correctly answering the math question, the follow-up questions were from the "literature" category. They were asked a series of questions about women in the BIBLE! Obviously, the Catholic schools closed it out. The BRMHS kids were incredulous but found a lot of humor in the situation and won't lose any sleep over it.

The Bible is a work of world literature and of unparalleled significance to the western world. Those presuming to be in the intellectual elite should be familiar with it.

Not many other books have been as celebrated as The Bible. Figured some smart kids would know that.

Guess BETA has become a lot more political.

Sure, but it is not on the usual reading list for public schools! I have often said it is pretty good fiction and a heck of a lot easier to read than the Quran.

Most kids are required to read The Grapes of Wrath in both types of schools. No public school student is required to read the bible. There is definitely a difference here.

Nope...not mad and not surprised. I can guarantee you had they asked questions about the Quran the tar and feathers would be at the ready. There are "a few" other great works of literature from which to pull from that are likely to have been read by smart high school Christians, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, etc.

Few high school students have ever read Utopia that doesn't mean that it wasn't a question asked during the quiz bowl competition at the Senior BETA State Meet when I was in high school.

Yeah but you failed to tell everybody how BRMHS got their big lead during the History round when the Catholic schools kept ringing in with their answer 'God did it'.

Fair point, but I can see how these questions would come off as a bit unfair. I have never read the bible, but I know plenty of the stories just from CCD growing up. On one side, you have kids that are taught these stories in the classroom while on the other side they weren't.

I don't even think believers consider it to be historically accurate

Pretty much no one actually believes the bible.
