So is this Coinbase safe to use real information?

you HAVE to give real information (even SS). Coinbase is a US company and is bound by US federal regulations. it's like a bank

they have to ensure that you're not laundering money or anything of the sort

*ETA: you have to do this with prepaid cards these days also

Would cryptocurrencies rise in value if the dollar is doing badly?

if the USD became somewhat unstable, cryptocurrencies would be one of the best currencies in teh world b/c the world would literally be crashing around us

So it is US regulated, but you still recommend using prepaid to buy instead of your bank account? Sorry if I seem dumb on this.

Did any of you bother to look at the trend line on this? It was at $8 on Dec31, and only $90 last week. It seems like with a 100% run up in a week that there should be a sell off and dip coming that you should be waiting on to buy.

Unfortunately I don't think I can do it. I typed in my card info, etc, and I double-checked. None of the works. I also searched for bank, trying to do bank account, and my bank wasn't listed. Seems like I'm screwed out of trying to get into this.

Sounds great, except that it's still not able to be exchanged at that level. Unless you want to do that many transactions for a Ruby Tuesday gift card or something along those lines.

That rings a bell. I also thought one of the intermediaries just shut down and if they held your coins, the were gone.
That's true. That's why one should keep their coins offline.

Perhaps we will get to a point when cryptocurrencies are commonly swapped and accepted like dollars. But, it's going to take a lot of work to convince the majority of people that the digitized money world can be trusted when big banks aren't involved. Not to start a generation battle, but that certainly isn't happening while boomers are alive and probably will never be mainstream for gen x.
I don't know about the currencies themselves, but JP Morgan is seemingly leading the push to incorporate blockchain tech into all banking transactions.

Yep. They are one of the big players, but some of the other big boys are involved too. I spoke with one of the JP Morgan execs working in this area at an MIT blockchain discussion a couple of months ago.

I can't wait to watch a bunch of you fools lose money.

ETA: Blockchain has a place in this world. But Bitcoin because of where it's been and what it is, is not the thing to hang your hat on.

Not me, bro. I own zero bitcoin (or any other form of cryptocurrency for that matter). I have to say that I feel pangs of regret in not doing so when we're at the top of a bubble like this though.

I am, however, very interested in the technology behind it, and I have been involved in it to varying degrees over the past few years.

Not you but some poor sap is going to listen to SFP or someone who has some credibility here and think "Hey, I could sink 5k into this and really make some money for my family" and shite the bed with this thing. It's scary, it's easily manipulated, thefts have been rampant and it's used to buy drugs. This is NOT the type of currency/investment I'm going to hang my hat on. Wiki may have never made a dime on it. He never says how much he owns if any. Yet these tools label him a bazillionaire.

And downvote away. LSURussian and I have been very vocal about this topic and it's dangers.

Preach.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking like this.
