It actually was Mardi Gras. Infection spread at the town's Karnival parade and parties then schools and daycares.

I know people were filthy but I also find it hard to believe fleas spread so quickly from Asia to England.

Finding the virus on a surface does not mean it is able to infect someone.

You can find the virus RNA but that does not automatically translate to it being in a form where you can get infected by touching it.

This theory doesn't explain the 1376 current cases in a small town and neighboring district. Large social gathering was responsible for initial promulgation but the outbreak there was quickly identified and it still spread through typical daily interactions.

I agree just because it's on the surface it doesn't mean it can infect. However, the quote in the OP link says

The RNA says it is there but not necessarily in a form that can infect.

I would rather it be spread on surfaces than in the air. On surfaces, I can just wash my hands and not touch my face.
