our missiles don’t shoot down ICBMs in space, only on their terminal descent.

Why don't you Google that since you love going off their info.

Even Google says you're wrong.

Why don’t you just tell me what really happens and name your source?

Ideally they would be shot down before making it to space. Which is why there are strategic bases in Europe and Asia.

My source was Google. I remember when it happened and Googled the year. It was 2020 when the US demonstrated it could shoot down an ICBM in space. We used an SM3 from an Arleigh Burke class destroyer.

It was either us or Israel that shot down one of Iran's missiles outside the earth's atmosphere when they launched all those missiles and cruise missiles a year or so ago. Might have been Israel, but I'm not sure. There's video of it.

Yes that would be ideal, but Russian ICBMs aren’t going to get within range of any defenses in Europe or Asia, they’re coming from Siberia over the North Pole and Canada. Maybe we have a few defense systems in Hawaii and Alaska but it’s probably only enough know down a few missiles, not an all out attack. Probably geared more towards defending against North Korea than Russia or China.

The Aegis system, which is used by the U.S. and other allies.

quote:

BMD capabilities allow vessels equipped with Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) to intercept ballistic missiles in post-boost phase and prior to reentry, using the RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) mid-course interceptors[13] and the RIM-156 Standard Missile 2 Extended Range Block IV (SM-2ER Block IV)[14] terminal-phase interceptors.[15] The SM-2ER Block IV can engage the ballistic missiles within the atmosphere (i.e. endoatmospheric intercept) in the terminal phase of a missile's trajectory with a blast fragmentation warhead. The Standard Missile 3 is a development of the SM2-ER Block IV, capable of exo-atmospheric intercept (i.e. above the atmosphere) during the midcourse phase;

Okay neat? What type of system was it and where was it launched from and where did the incoming missile come from?

Yes I’m aware of Aegis. The problem is that those are regional and theater defense systems. They have to be in the right spots at the right time.

You're not going to be happy unless Russia launches a bunch of ICBMs at us and you're either 1) proven wrong, or 2) dead (because you're right). Either way, you lose.

Maybe give it a rest because you look like a dumbass in this thread.

I look the only one who uses his brain and doesn’t get all of his intro from movies and cheesy YouTube videos. You’re all wrong and I’m all right.

.Russia can send over a nuclear ICBM

Their fleet of ICBMs have sat unmaintained for decades. So not only has the missile itself degraded (including the fuel) but all the allied electronics components needed for launch have also degraded. They arent even sure where all the silos are.

Also all the technical people that know about such things just walked away decades ago when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Their ballistic missile submarines have fared better, but not much.

ICBM are ballistic missiles but not all ballistic missiles are ICBM. Our ships and Thad are more about stopping medium range ballistic missiles over ICBM. Stopping an ICBM is very hard you are not shooting a missile you are shooting at a warhead and that may look like 3 or more warheads, they have dummy warheads to confuse interceptors. They are small, they don't have large heat signatures and they are more likely going to get through. It's why both sides went to these weapons as the primary platform. The only thing to stop them from being used is the idea that we'd detect the launch and give it back to them and we'd both be destroyed.

The American public has wildly inflated ideas about the reality of our military. They are dang good, they do some crazy neat stuff they don't negate ICBMs from being effective means of delivering nukes. If they did we'd have long ago stopped spending money on ICBMs.

We don’t have anti ballistic missile batteries littered throughout the US and on all military bases. Where did you learn that we do? Weapons are in storage

I never claimed that they all do. Key areas like the Pacific in places like Hawaii and Guam Alaska, DC (there is an Iron Dome system surrounding DC), California most certainly have batteries on standby. That doesn't include all the Aegis destroyers positioned all across the world, whatever the Air Force/Space Force have for tracking and whatever else is out there that we have no clue about (space lasers).
