True, but that's still their fault.

Asking a girl to formally marry you shouldn't be something that comes out of the blue. It should be well-established beforehand.

The actual proposal is really just a nice occasion to celebrate making the engagement official. It shouldn't be "the big moment" when you find out whether she wants to marry you or not. That question should've already been long-answered.

I had already booked the venue with my husband’s credit card before he proposed. I was that sure he was going to propose.

They change their mind from day to day, then settle for the jackass who’s unemployed and has a kid. Seen it more times than I can count.

Grandpaw used to always say that it's hard for them to say "No" when they are wrapped up and bound inside a roll of carpet and gagged with duct tape.

He served life for doing that.

But, after Grandmaw got run over by a reindeer, Grandpaw went off his rocker just a bit.

That's funny. I just had this conversation with my 13 yr old daughter and it went pretty much like that. "Yea, that is just for movies babe. In real life no man is going to ask you to marry him unless he knows you're going to say yes." And just among guys, what kind of man asks any question he doesn't already know the answer to? I must qualify that with When questioning a woman..

It’s wrong to put a girl on the spot like that.

A proposal should be a pleasant surprising formality.

Isn't a surprise putting someone on the spot as well?

People lie or not completely honest.

I suspect a lot of the no’s happen because the time of truth is at hand and they really are not ready to make that commitment. I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as you are suggesting.

My wife picked out her ring so I really didn't propose.

Here's my easy fix: present your Proposal as a hypothetical question OR the venerable "Asking for a friend".

"Hypothetically speaking, if I were to Propose to you right now, what's your best guess WRT your answer?"

"A friend of mine would like to know what your answer would be if I were to Propose to you right now. So, what's your best guess WRT what your answer would be?"

Too easy. Problem solved.

PS I always use these techniques when I Propose.

same - I had no fear my wife would say anything other than yes. but we also got to know each other for 3 years prior to me proposing and we both knew by that point we were going to be together.
