he does have some catchy songs, but his voice does get aggravating after a couple of songs. Rap in general is definitely in the craps now a days. They just dont put any thought into a song no more. No story telling like 8 ball and mjg. But a good beat can do the song wonders. I'll still take my juvenile and mystikal all day over the new crap. But admit i still listen to it. and i'm a pretty old fart too

To answer the original question; I think being from Baton Rouge and blowing up on a national level is part of why the white kids at Spanish town are so feverently attached to him. Maybe not it some of the songs you've heard, but there's a level of depth in his music that I think people attached with. I also think his interviews (not just his crazy booty talk or whatever) when he delves into depression and what have you; people identify with that and the presented vulnerability makes them feel more connected with the artist they're a fan of. Plus your Spanishtown crowd also likes that as with any one else from where you're from; he references places and things they might be familiar with.
He's been having some pretty big shows around the nation and had those two smaller European tours; I'd definitely say his fame is rising rather swiftly.
I like Kevin Gates; but even my brother who doesn't really like rap music gives him a listen

Can confirm that tons of people at A&M listen to Kevin Gates.
