I had to put my best friend down in January. We had him for 13 years or so and he was at least 17 years old. I looked at pictures of him the other day and started crying. He was such a great dog, he went through a life threatening medical condition a few years after we got him, and beat that like the champ he was.

The only time I've shed a tear in the last 15 years is when my wife was in the hospital and when I had to put a dog down.
It was hard at first, but I promise you'll only remember the happy times fairly soon.

I'm so sorry for you bro. A good and loyal dog is about as good as it gets. Never apologize or regret expressing your affection for your dog. I wish he would have been able to stay healthy and with you longer.

I stayed with mine until the bitter end.
I had his wounds healed,took care of his heartworms and had him in my life for almost 11 years.

I have done it twice and both times I think I had the entire Vet staff in tears. I know the third time is coming soon.
However, all three friends had/having great lives because of my family. These three friends made our lives better.
It is ok. You did it right. It will get better.

Prayers sent. Lost a cat I had for over 16 years. She had cancer as well and it was damn near as hard as losing my mom. It hit me for a solid week. I have some friends I haven't known for 16 years and I treat my animals like my family, so when they pass on, it is almost as hard. She passed away on our front yard and I think it was as peaceful as you can expect. She just laid down and quit breathing.

I had to do this in the last year as well. It was brutal. I decided it was selfish of me to let her suffer, so I finally did it. Remember the good stuff. Mine was mischievous and would do things like eat baseboards, try to bury poo in my bed, etc. At the time I was furious. Funny thing is now that she's gone, those are the memories that make me smile and laugh.

Had to do this earlier this year. Wasn't easy but it gave me a peace of mind knowing she wasn't suffering anymore
