Ran for the first time last night. Terrain was flat sidewalk ( race route will be closed off downtown streets). I was sucking wind after the first mile and somehow was able to make it to 1.5 before I had to stop. I was blazing for the first mile though, with my app telling me I was at a 9.30 pace. Surprisingly, I ran the .5 miles at just over 10 minutes. It felt much slower than a 10 minute pace, but this is my first time doing this, so what do I know. The second half was a disaster. I walked for about 5 minutes to regain my composure and did the rest in intervals. Jog 30 seconds, walk 30 seconds. Overall I went 2.7 miles in about 36 minutes. The soreness is kicking in this morning, especially in the upper thighs. Feels a little sweet actually. It feels like what I've imagined a period feels like.

Gotta be honest with you, this is a little better than I thought you’d do on your test run

Kudos for getting after it! There’s been some good advice thus far so nothing to add. Like others have said, hydrate a lot, stretch and take it easy. Maybe light jogging short distances or even just walking. The soreness will likely get worse throughout the day but you’ll be all right.

Still think you should just tell her the truth and say you’re gonna run anyway

Crickets.

My first CCC10K in 1998 or 97, I trained using that guide thay used to put in the paper. (Jan-Apr, builds up to running 6 miles)

Never ran before that and finished it in just under 62.

No training at all for OP run 3x10 is gonna be tough, unless he's in his teens/early 20s.

I'm positive I could do it in under 29 with no training.... as long as my Segway is fully charged

Yeah, that should be this guy’s benchmark.

Do a google search for 5k results and look at the top finishers. Look at their ages. If the top finisher runs in the mid-teens, he or she is usually 16-18 years old. Of course some kid on the HS cross country team or who runs distance for the track team is going to smoke everyone.

If the top finisher isn’t a teenager, they usually win with a low-20s time. Occasionally 19. A 30 minute is typically good enough to finish between the top 3rd and top half...slightly above average...meaning most runners (people who actually show up on race day) aren’t running that fast. Let alone a guy who has never run before in his life.

Cracks me up how people on here believe that anybody who isn’t disabled or morbidly obese should just be able to hop their sedentary butts out of an office chair and cruise at 6 mph

That seems to match up with the winnings times for this same 5k last year. Finishing sub 30 would actually put me in the top 100 out of 350+.

The last 5K I ran had a 44 year old that finished in 2nd place around the 15 minute mark.

Do you think that’s the usual case?

Again, look at a bunch of race results and come back and tell me what you believe to be typical.

you trained for 2 months and couldn't beat 26 minutes

Tell me about your 5K times, bro.

I didn't run track or cross country in high school, but I was always a top 5 finisher in the mile run at school, so I'm naturally fast. I also played high school soccer. I think 26 minutes in the summer heat with hills involved is solid for someone that was sitting on the couch 2 months earlier.

I typically see late 20s and early 30s as being the best times. That's around the age when people start caring more about their health and exercise on a regular basis.

I’ve ran a bunch of 5ks in my life and I’m generally a 20 min 5ker and unless it’s just a super small race, low 20s isn’t going to win anything, maybe an age group here and there at best

Right...but those people aren’t typically winning with 15-16 minute times.

They’re winning with times around the 20 minutes mark.

That’s my point. The HS cross country kid who shows up just for kicks or iron man 44 year old aren’t the typical 5K winners.

My boss is 45 and he could run a 16 minute 5k...but he also runs several marathons a year, including Boston. Again, not the typical case.

What’s your definition of “super small”? I’ve seen races with 100 people that are won by someone who ran 19, 20 or even 21

If you want to impress her, sit in a lawn chair at the finish line with a bottle of wine.

She'll love you. Chicks dig wine.
