I get your point, though. If I were doing it for a living I wouldn't use cheap sh*t.

Exactly, sure some of you guys can do alot with with less or non standard ,but if you own a buisness you will invest in tools and equipment and that is where a good bit of cost come in. Good, Fast, and Cheap you can only pick 2 and most buisnesses will pick good and fast which ain't cheap.

And you have absolutely no justification to tell someone else what they should charge for their services.

I've never met a w-2 worker who turned down a raise because they felt they were getting compensated too much. But some people expect other people to do just that because of "honor" and "being a good guy".

Also, there are a shocking number of people who like to pretend they are some sort of Oracle and can decide what is "fair" rate without any consideration of capitalism or free markets.:
"thats a fair salary. Also, I have no industry knowledge of that job or what similar workers are getting compensated. But in my gut I feel that is about what those people should top out at."

In free markets, which is most of blue collar work, the agreed price is the correct compensation.

Now apply your logic to a bigger job, you think you can drop a transmission or pull out an engine with cheap tools or loaners? I doubt it. Also you are not taking into account that most are not willing to do so.

I pulled and replaced my father in law's engine out of his 85 Dodge truck with what I got. Added a few goodies to get the power up a little for towing. And slapped an aces fuel injection system on it. With just what I have.

A lot more can be done that you think without a 72 inch wide box full of specialty tools.

Yea.... the professional needs the high priced tools. Mac, Snap On, S&K, Matco, etc. The home guy doesn't.

I hate to tell you folks.. but the guy under your car changing the oil isn't a master technician. He's not in a dealer tech center diagnosing a complex issue for repair for a reason. And it's not because their are no open spots for another master technician. I know that my drain plug has a new copper gasket every change because I put it there, I know the oil filter is spun on right because I put it there. I know that anything else in and around the area is ok because I look up into the engine bay and the front suspension from the bottom to see any upcoming problems because I don't want a failure to tell me something is wrong. The guy under my vehicle servicing it doesn't care if a ball joint boot is torn and leaking grease... he doesn't care if I have a strut leaking fluid.. he don't care if my sway bar bushings are wearing... he doesn't care if I have a coolant hose thats showing signs of impending failure.. he's worried about getting back to the break room and getting that last doughnut after you get out of the bay.

I don't do my own stuff because I'm too cheap or love wasting time, I know I'm going to take my time and it's not going to be half assed.

Much respect to you. Some DIY guys enjoy doing blue collar type work and some do it because they are skilled and knowledgeable. Bragging about it makes you appear more manly, mission accomplished for you

If a person cannot or will not then they have to hire a business. Just because a neighbor can go but parts or materials and fix or repair that does not mean that performing the task is not worthy of being properly compensated.

The Metric you speak of is a long discussion with beer etc. on the back porch
Many ideas but not much of a cure but learning how to do the things that get your hands dirty.
As a country we are in trouble and most are only worried about the next tic tok video

Most established service providers are charging well beyond normal inflation metrics.
So you're alleging margins have expanded? Provide numbers. And sauces.

I don't think you know what "cook the books" means.
