I read if you are bitten by a coral, you are in trouble bc we don’t have antivenin. So I’ve read.
there is still some out there, but it has been expired since 2008 or 2010. Cost too much to produce for so few uses. Last confirmed bite in LA was in 2005 and audubon zoo had the antivenin. but this is interesting..

Just reinforces the old theory...we don't deserve dogs.

Same here. When I hear “that bark” I know they have cornered a snake. I try to intervene if it is a King Snake as those prey on venomous snakes. Mud snakes and water snakes are fair game though. If you have ever seen a Mongoose “play” a snake, the approach is similar.

Are you sure? I was tracking all corfab goes through Switzerland or somewhere in Europe is what was taught when I did my time as a reptile handler we went down south with venom 1 reaction team and a few other places that sold the venom to some place in Europe that makes the best anti venom crofab though bites from coral snakes I believe they stopped manufacturing that antivenom and just put you on life support until u pass the venom.

Now a canebreak bite will hats nasty.

Man, I am so sorry to hear that. Sweet pup. Hope y'all are hanging in there.

We moved in 2022 to a house with a large yard, flowing rainwater creek, etc. which attracts a lot of wildlife (for the part of the city we are in, at least) and at first I was sad that my dog is elderly and can't enjoy it like she would have 5+ years ago.

But then I see stories like this, and maybe I'm glad she doesn't have the energy to do more than sit on the porch.

... Not to say I haven't caught a snake on my porch twice already..

I don't have personal, direct experience with it, but the stories of venomous handlers who have been bit back it up. There's also the occasional news story of native bites that wind up costing people/families outrageous money. Much like everything else, it is probably insurance frickery that accounts for the cost difference.

Venom 1 does good work all over the world. Any venomous handler who has kept snakes for any real length of time has some type of working relationship with them.

An interesting rabbit hole is Ray Hunter. He has a decent YouTube presence. The guy has been injecting various snake venoms for years now. Not for just shits and giggles, but because he handles several venomous species on a daily basis, and his chances of a bite are a gazillion times higher than pretty much anyone else. He milks snakes for places like Venom 1. He started injecting highly diluted elapid venoms and now can take a bite with little more than a bee sting equivalent reaction.

For those wondering, yorkie that didn't make it at the emergency vet ended up being 5 vials of antivenom, $4,500.

We haven't paid the bill for the GSP yet since they want to keep him another night. Initial estimate was around $750, with the extra night and fluids and all I wouldn't be surprised if it hits $1,500.

Worth every penny, only wish I would have gotten the little guy to the vet sooner. Today has been a somber day, telling the kids Buddy didn't make it, kicking myself for every thing I can think of.

Appreciate all the information and well wishes this thread has presented. Just needed somewhere to talk about it, wife and kids are so tore up they don't need to see me hurting.

That wild, two of the snake handlers we observed were severely I mean severely reactive to venom he would walk into facility to teach us the class and demonstrate milking the snakes and he would immediately start coughing n sniffling bc he was having allergic reactions to the venom I’m guessing dried out airborn in the facilities.

He kept anti venom pins on the end of every single wall of snakes bc he was bit so often and sometimes would react like he was bit just walking in. But the thing is he was becoming allergic to the corfab so he kept two epi pins and the crofab pins at the end of every shelf dude was a wild man, missing a few digits from snake bites.

I’m going to check out ray hunter this evening

What is most concerning is that you can develop that allergy without knowing. You can get bit one time and make it, but the next one could kill you in minutes as opposed to hours.

There's a South African handler (he has all sorts of animals in his sanctuary) on YouTube who developed an allergy after one bite. Years ago he got bit by a black mamba. He made it out after being on a vent for a while, but started noticing that when he was around the snakes he would start having issues breathing and become itchy. He still keeps and catches nuisance snakes, but keeps a kit of epinephrine and adrenaline with him at all times. Dingo Dinkleman is his YouTube name. He used to have hundreds of videos on YouTube, but someone stole them all, filed copyright claims against him for his own stuff, and got the channel shut down completely. They started a new one and have been reloading the old videos along with new ones.

I don't get the whole venomous keeping just for the sake of having them. They're just too big a risk.

don't kick yourself.. clearly you loved the little guy and made decisions with the information you had at the time.

Losing a dog is so hard.

I've had my dogs vaccinated against snake bite ... I hope I never have to find out if it works.

In the past, years ago, I lost a good Border Collie to a canebrake bite but I had a Blue Healer survive a cotton mouth bite. Both times there were quick trips, 30 minutes or less, to the vet ... one survived, one didn't.

He was a tough little shite. Every snake we have seen on our 20 acres, we saw it because he killed it.

The GSP hollered like someone cut his leg off, the yorkie just walked into the house like it was another day. Part of the reason why we missed it. Treating one emergency and didn't think to check him too.

That's on me, I could have got him there sooner if I was thinking to check him. He probably would have lived, I have to bear that part. He didn't deserve to go that way, and he deserved better from me as an owner.

Real Yorkies are true terriers. Mine has scraped with raccoons twice his size, he’s a menace to squirrels, and I’ve seen him thrash a huge rat to death in mere seconds. Awesome little dogs.

Booga, my offer stands to find any cottonmouths around your pond if you’re within an hour or two of Folsom. Found 7 cottons on my creek today and caught a few.
